The iPhone 17 launched in the U.S. for $799 with 256GB of storage, while the iPhone 15 Plus launched at $899 with 128GB. That makes the newer phone $100 cheaper at launch and gives its base model twice the storage. The 15 Plus still has the larger screen: 6.7 inches versus 6.3 inches. Choose between them based on screen size, the iPhone 17’s newer display and camera features, and the actual price and condition of the phone you can buy today.

Those figures do not establish what either phone costs now. A current comparison should use the same country, storage capacity, condition, and carrier or unlocked status; the 15 Plus may be available as used, refurbished, or remaining new stock. Apple’s current unlocked checkout price and the present value of 15 Plus stock are not established here.

What the screen difference means
Pick the iPhone 15 Plus for a bigger display
Its 6.7-inch display gives the 15 Plus a clear size advantage for readers who prefer more screen area. The trade-off is choosing an older model rather than the iPhone 17’s listed display features.
Pick the iPhone 17 for smoother scrolling and Always-On
Apple lists ProMotion up to 120Hz and an Always-On display for the iPhone 17. The 17 is physically smaller at 6.3 inches, so it suits someone who wants those features in a more compact screen size. Apple’s cited 15 Plus comparison excerpt does not list an equivalent refresh-rate or always-on specification; that alone should not be treated as proof that a feature is absent.

Camera differences: published features, not a photo-quality verdict
The iPhone 15 Plus has a dual-camera system with a 48MP Main camera and an Ultra Wide camera. Apple describes the iPhone 17 as a 48MP Dual Fusion system, with a 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide, 2x optical-quality telephoto framing, and 48MP macro photography.
Those specifications show that Apple lists more specific camera capabilities for the 17, but they do not establish how much better its photos look in everyday use. There is no independent side-by-side photo test behind this comparison, so choose based on the listed features you expect to use rather than an unverified claim of image superiority.

Chip and battery: what the numbers can and cannot tell you
The 15 Plus uses Apple’s A16 Bionic chip and the 17 uses A19. The newer chip generation is on the iPhone 17, but the chip names alone do not quantify real-world speed or prove how much faster one phone feels.
Apple estimates up to 26 hours of video playback for iPhone 15 Plus and up to 30 hours for iPhone 17. That is a four-hour difference in Apple’s stated maximum playback figures, not a promise of everyday battery life; actual use varies.

USB-C is common to both, but check transfer speed
Both phones have a USB-C connector, and Apple lists USB 2 for each. The iPhone 17 specification page states USB 2 speeds up to 480 Mb/s. USB-C describes the connector shape; it does not by itself mean high-speed data transfer.

Choose iPhone 15 Plus if screen size matters most
- You specifically want a 6.7-inch display.
- You can find a 15 Plus at a price and condition that make sense compared with the 17.
- You are comfortable assessing whether a used, refurbished, or remaining new-stock listing meets your needs.
Choose iPhone 17 if you want newer listed features and more base storage
- You prefer a 6.3-inch phone with ProMotion up to 120Hz and Always-On display.
- You want the newer A19 generation and the camera features Apple lists, including 48MP Ultra Wide and macro photography.
- You value 256GB of base storage; at U.S. launch, the 17 offered that capacity for $100 less than the 15 Plus’s 128GB launch configuration.
Before buying either today, compare live listings using the same storage, condition, market, and carrier status. The launch-price difference is useful context, but it cannot tell you which current listing is the better deal.
