How much cheaper was the iPhone 17 at launch?
The iPhone 17’s $799 US launch starting price was $200 below the iPhone 14 Pro’s $999 US launch starting price, before trade-in. What changes most in daily use?
The iPhone 17 has a larger, brighter display
Both phones have OLED screens with ProMotion up to 120Hz. The 17’s listed diagonal is 6.3 inches, versus 6.1 inches on the 14 Pro, and Apple lists outdoor peak brightness up to 3,000 nits versus 2,000 nits. That makes the 17 the stronger specification choice for more screen area and published outdoor brightness; it does not by itself establish a difference in every viewing condition.
The iPhone 17 uses a newer chip
The iPhone 17 has Apple’s A19 chip, while the 14 Pro uses A16 Bionic. These specifications establish the newer chip generation, but do not quantify how much faster one phone is in a particular task. Apple lists Apple Intelligence for iPhone 17; feature eligibility and availability can change by iOS version and region, so check Apple’s current requirements for the features you intend to use.

USB-C changes cable compatibility, not the stated data tier
The iPhone 17 uses USB-C and the 14 Pro uses Lightning. USB-C may simplify cable sharing with newer devices, but the 17’s listed USB 2 data speed is up to 480 Mb/s; the connector alone is not evidence of high-speed file transfers.
Apple’s playback estimates favor the iPhone 17
Apple rates the iPhone 17 for up to 30 hours of video playback and 27 hours of streamed video, compared with up to 23 and 20 hours respectively for the 14 Pro. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent real-world tests; actual battery life varies with settings, network conditions, battery condition and usage.

Wireless charging rates are higher on the iPhone 17
Apple lists MagSafe charging up to 25W and Qi2 up to 25W for iPhone 17, versus MagSafe up to 15W and Qi up to 7.5W for iPhone 14 Pro. Reaching a listed rate depends on compatible accessories and power adapters.

Choose the 14 Pro for a dedicated 3x telephoto lens
The 14 Pro has a separate 12MP 3x telephoto camera, as well as its main and ultra-wide cameras. That gives it dedicated native longer optical reach compared with the iPhone 17’s 2x optical-quality option derived from its main camera. Apple also lists digital zoom up to 15x on the 14 Pro and up to 10x on the 17; digital zoom is not the same as optical reach.

The iPhone 17 has a 48MP ultra-wide camera
The 17’s two rear cameras are both listed at 48MP, while the 14 Pro has a 12MP ultra-wide camera alongside its 48MP main camera and telephoto hardware. Resolution alone does not determine which phone produces better photos. Choose based on the focal lengths and capture features you actually use, not megapixel counts alone.

Pro formats and front-camera features differ
Apple lists ProRAW and ProRes capture for the 14 Pro, making it the more relevant option for someone whose photo or video workflow specifically uses those formats. ProRes limits depend on capacity: Apple lists up to 4K/30, but 1080p/30 on the 128GB model. The iPhone 17’s listed differentiators include spatial video and macro capability. On the front, the 17 has an 18MP Center Stage camera and the 14 Pro a 12MP TrueDepth camera; the resolution figures alone do not establish image quality.
Which should you choose?
The iPhone 17 fits buyers prioritizing newer hardware
- Pick the iPhone 17 if you want the larger display, higher listed outdoor peak brightness, USB-C, newer-generation chip or higher Apple-rated video playback.
- Its base capacity is 256GB, compared with 128GB for the 14 Pro’s base configuration, so compare prices at equal storage when shopping.
- For a new purchase, assess its value against the actual price available to you today rather than relying on the historical launch-price gap.
The iPhone 14 Pro fits specific camera and capture needs
- Consider the 14 Pro if you specifically want a dedicated 3x telephoto camera or need its ProRAW or ProRes workflows.
- For a used or refurbished unit, weigh the asking price against its storage, physical condition, battery condition, seller terms and the exact accessories you already own.
- Its Lightning connector means it will not use the same cable as the iPhone 17’s USB-C port.
The feature comparison here is based on Apple’s published specifications, not hands-on testing. Apple describes the 14 Pro launch with “the first-ever 48MP Main camera on iPhone” in its September 16, 2022 Newsroom announcement; that is Apple’s launch wording, not an independent assessment.
