The iPhone 14 Pro Max is a conventional 2022 flagship phone; Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, announced in 2026, is a newer foldable that opens into an 8-inch display. The key choice is therefore not just a specification contest: it is a traditional phone versus a device that can become a larger workspace. Published prices are available for the Samsung in the UK and US, but the available figures do not establish a fair, current price difference against the iPhone.
At a glance: a slab phone versus a foldable
Apple introduced iPhone 14 Pro Max in September 2022, while Samsung announced Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra in August 2026. They belong to different product generations, so their specifications should be read in that context rather than as a same-year head-to-head test. Apple’s launch announcement and Samsung’s global launch announcement establish those dates.

Which has the bigger screen?
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra has the larger available viewing area when opened: its inner display measures 8 inches, alongside a 6.5-inch cover display for use while folded. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has one 6.7-inch-class display and does not unfold. Samsung specifies Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays with adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rates; Apple lists a 2796 × 1290 Super Retina XDR OLED display with adaptive ProMotion up to 120Hz. These are manufacturer specifications, not the results of a comparative display test. See Apple’s iPhone specifications and Samsung UK’s Fold8 specifications.

The Fold8 Ultra’s inner screen is the more relevant feature if you want extra room for reading, viewing content, or working with apps on a larger panel. Its cover screen provides a phone-sized way to use the device without opening it. The trade-off is carrying and using a device with a hinge and a foldable inner display.

Choose the iPhone format for a conventional phone
The iPhone’s display is larger than the Samsung’s cover screen by the stated diagonal measurements, but it remains a single, fixed panel. That makes it the straightforward option if you prefer a traditional slab phone and do not need a screen that opens into a larger workspace.
How do the cameras and processors compare?
On paper, Samsung lists higher megapixel counts for the Fold8 Ultra’s main and ultra-wide cameras, while Apple specifies several camera options, including 2x and 3x telephoto views. Megapixels and lens labels alone do not establish which phone takes better photos. No controlled side-by-side image comparison is established by the cited specifications, so a camera winner cannot be named from these numbers.
Rank #2
- 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display featuring Always-On & ProMotion.
The iPhone uses Apple’s A16 Bionic; the Fold8 Ultra uses Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. These processor names identify different platforms, but the published material cited here does not provide a directly comparable benchmark. It is not enough to conclude which is faster in real-world use.

Apple lists the iPhone 14 Pro Max at 240g, and Samsung lists the Fold8 Ultra at 215g. Samsung gives folded dimensions of 72.8 × 158.4 × 8.9mm and an unfolded thickness of 4.1mm excluding the display frame. Weight alone does not capture the different handling: one is a slab, while the other has a hinge and an inner foldable display.

Apple rates the iPhone 14 Pro Max IP68 under IEC 60529, with the stated rating covering submersion up to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. Samsung’s US product page lists IP48 for the Fold8 Ultra. These ratings use different classifications and should not be treated as a direct durability test of the foldable display or hinge. The iPhone’s rating does not mean that liquid damage is impossible.
Apple states up to 29 hours of video playback for iPhone 14 Pro Max. Samsung lists a typical 5,000mAh battery for the Fold8 Ultra and says it can reach up to 67% charge in around 30 minutes using a 45W adapter and 3A USB-C cable under its stated test conditions; the adapter is sold separately. A manufacturer playback estimate and a battery capacity figure are different kinds of specifications, not a real-world endurance comparison.

- 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display featuring Always-On & ProMotion.
What is the price difference?
A precise price difference cannot be calculated from the published figures below: they cover different countries and dates, and the iPhone figure is a historical launch price rather than a current quote.
| Market and source | Published amount | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| India, Apple announcement, 2022 | INR 139,900 | iPhone 14 Pro Max launch price in India, not a current selling price |
| United Kingdom, Samsung announcement, 2026 | £1,899 (256GB); £2,069 (512GB); £2,409 (1TB) | Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra published UK RRPs |
| United States, Samsung product page, accessed 7 October 2026 | From $2,099.99 | Page-listed starting price before trade-in; the amount may vary with configuration or promotion |
The Samsung amounts come from Samsung UK’s announcement and Samsung US’s product page. For a useful comparison before buying, check both phones in the same country and on the same date, match storage where possible, and account for condition, discounts, and trade-in assumptions. Without that like-for-like check, saying the Fold8 Ultra costs a specific amount more would be misleading.
Is a foldable screen worth the price?
That depends on whether you will use the larger inner display often enough to justify paying for a foldable design. The cited price information confirms that Samsung’s UK Fold8 Ultra RRP varies by storage and that its US page lists a starting price, but it does not establish a current, comparable iPhone price or what either model will cost in every retailer’s promotions.
Quick Recap
- The Fold8 Ultra’s defining advantage on the listed specifications is the 8-inch inner display, with a smaller cover screen for folded use.
- The iPhone 14 Pro Max offers a conventional design and a single 6.7-inch-class display.
- Do not decide on camera quality, speed, or everyday battery life from the specification numbers alone; the cited material does not provide controlled comparative tests for those areas.
