The iPhone 16 Pro Max is the newer, larger-screen model, with a faster A18 Pro chip, USB-C, a 5x telephoto camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide camera and Apple Intelligence support. The iPhone 14 Pro Max still offers a 48MP main camera, a 3x telephoto camera and a 6.7-inch display. Whether the newer phone is worth the upgrade depends on which features matter to you and the current price for equivalent storage and condition.
What is different between the iPhone 14 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max?
Apple introduced the iPhone 14 Pro Max in 2022 and the iPhone 16 Pro Max in 2024. The newer model makes practical changes to the display, cameras, connector and supported features, rather than simply refreshing the same hardware.

These are Apple’s published specifications for the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Water resistance is not permanent protection against damage, especially on a used phone.

The 16 Pro Max gives you a 6.9-inch display, compared with 6.7 inches on the 14 Pro Max. Both are OLED panels with ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz and a listed pixel density of 460 ppi. The newer phone is slightly taller and thicker, but Apple lists it as 13g lighter: 227g versus 240g.

That makes the newer model a larger-screen phone without a weight increase. If one-handed handling or pocket size matters, note that the 16 Pro Max is 163mm tall versus 160.7mm for the 14 Pro Max; its width is the same at 77.6mm.
Which phone has the better cameras?
Main and Ultra Wide cameras
Both phones have a 48MP main camera. The 16 Pro Max pairs its 48MP Fusion main camera with a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, while the 14 Pro Max has a 12MP Ultra Wide camera. The higher stated Ultra Wide resolution gives the newer model a hardware advantage for that camera, though resolution alone does not determine the quality of every photo.

Zoom reach
The 14 Pro Max has a 12MP 3x telephoto camera and a 12MP 2x option. The 16 Pro Max has a 12MP 5x telephoto camera, giving it greater optical telephoto reach for distant subjects. If you often photograph performances, sports or wildlife from a distance, that difference is likely more meaningful than the shared 48MP main-camera figure.

Video
Apple announced 4K video recording at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision for the iPhone 16 Pro generation. That is a specific video capability, not a guarantee that every recording will look better in every situation. Apple’s September 2024 announcement also describes the camera changes.

What do USB-C and storage mean in everyday use?
The iPhone 14 Pro Max uses Lightning, while the 16 Pro Max uses USB-C. On the 16 Pro Max, USB 3 transfer speeds require a USB 3 cable; using a different cable does not provide those speeds. The connector change may make the newer phone easier to fit into a USB-C charging and accessory setup, but it also means Lightning accessories may need an adapter or replacement.
The 14 Pro Max was offered with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage. The 16 Pro Max starts at 256GB and also comes in 512GB and 1TB. There is no 128GB configuration of the newer model, so compare prices at the same capacity where possible rather than treating the cheapest listing for each model as an equivalent comparison.

Does the iPhone 16 Pro Max support features the 14 Pro Max does not?
Apple lists Apple Intelligence support for the 16 Pro Max; its specifications page does not list support for the 14 Pro Max. Availability depends on the feature, language and region, so support for the phone does not mean every Apple Intelligence feature is available to every owner. Check Apple’s current feature and regional availability information before buying specifically for those capabilities.

The newer model also adds Camera Control, a camera-focused control Apple introduced with the iPhone 16 Pro generation. Apple announced cases designed to work with it as well. These additions are most relevant if you want newer camera controls and are willing to learn a different interaction style.

How does battery life compare?
Apple called the iPhone 16 Pro Max “the best battery life on iPhone ever” in its September 2024 launch announcement. That is Apple’s launch-era claim, not an independently verified head-to-head result or a promise about the condition of a used phone. For a second-hand device, battery health, workload, network conditions and software can all affect real-world endurance.
What is the price difference?
There is no reliable current like-for-like price difference established here. Prices vary by market, storage, condition, seller and warranty, and historical launch prices do not show what either phone costs now. Apple’s iPhone comparison catalogue provides model context but does not establish a current equivalent market price.
To make a useful comparison, check listings in your country for the same storage capacity, condition and warranty terms. The iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at 256GB, so compare it with a 256GB iPhone 14 Pro Max rather than its 128GB configuration. For used phones, include battery health and return or repair protections in your decision.
Should you upgrade from the iPhone 14 Pro Max?
The 16 Pro Max is a stronger fit if you want:
- A larger 6.9-inch screen while carrying a lighter phone by Apple’s listed weight.
- USB-C and the option of USB 3 transfer speeds with a compatible cable.
- A 5x telephoto camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide camera or Apple’s announced 4K120 Dolby Vision video mode.
- Apple Intelligence support, subject to feature, language and region availability.
- At least 256GB of storage in the base configuration.
Keeping or choosing the 14 Pro Max may make more sense if:
- Your current phone meets your needs and the newer model’s camera, connector or software features are not priorities.
- You prefer Lightning or rely on Lightning accessories.
- You want a 128GB option or find a better current price for an equivalent storage capacity and condition.
If you already own a 14 Pro Max, the upgrade is easiest to justify when you will use the longer telephoto reach, USB-C, newer video features or Apple Intelligence. If you are buying either model, make the decision using current local listings and the specific device’s condition—not an assumed price gap based on launch pricing.
