Apple released iPadOS 17.2 on December 11, 2023, with Apple Music, Messages, keyboard and other shared updates. But Journal was not part of the iPad release: Apple launched the app for iPhone with iOS 17.2. Journal later came to iPad with iPadOS 26, so its absence applies specifically to iPadOS 17.2—not to current iPad software.
What iPadOS 17.2 added to iPad
iPadOS 17.2 was the second major update in the iPadOS 17 cycle, following iPadOS 17.1. It brought changes to several apps and system features, rather than a major iPad-exclusive feature. Contemporary coverage described the release as a relatively modest update focused on shared app changes and fixes. AppleInsider’s release coverage and MacRumors’ feature rundown detail the launch.
- Apple Music: Favorites-related changes included a Favorites playlist, alongside new controls and recommendation-related settings.
- Messages: Users could navigate more easily to unread messages and react to messages with stickers using Tapback.
- Keyboard: Inline predictive text received improvements.
- FaceTime: A warning appeared when a blocked contact was participating in a group FaceTime call.
- TV: The app’s interface changed.
- Maintenance: The release included bug fixes, service updates and security improvements.
Those changes did not mean every iOS 17.2 feature was available on iPad. Some depended on iPhone hardware or were specific to Apple’s phone software.
Why Journal was missing
Journal was Apple’s new first-party app for recording everyday moments and major events. Entries could combine writing with photos, videos, audio recordings, locations, music, podcasts and other contextual material. Optional personalized suggestions drew on recent activity, and users could schedule reminders, bookmark entries and filter their journals. Apple introduced it as an iPhone app available with iOS 17.2—not as an iPadOS 17.2 app. Apple’s Journal announcement describes its features and original availability.

On iPadOS 17.2, Journal was unavailable, not simply hidden in the Home Screen or App Library. Updating an iPad did not install it, and there was no iPadOS 17.2 Journal download to find in the App Store. Apple’s iOS and iPadOS 17.2 release notes describe Journal for iPhone users. The cited Apple materials establish that platform limit but do not give a specific public reason for it.
How to install iPadOS 17.2
At its December 2023 release, eligible iPads could install the update over the air from Settings → General → Software Update. Back up the iPad first, connect it to Wi-Fi, and keep it on power while installation completes.

- Open Settings, then tap General → Software Update.
- If iPadOS 17.2 is offered, tap Download and Install.
- Enter the device passcode if prompted, and leave the iPad connected to power until the update finishes.
If the update does not appear, check the internet connection and available storage, restart the iPad, then revisit Software Update. You can also try updating through Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices or iTunes on a compatible Windows setup. Confirm the iPad supports that release; a school- or employer-managed device may have updates controlled by its administrator. This is the historical installation path for iPadOS 17.2, not a recommendation to install an old release instead of a current supported update.
Which iOS 17.2 features did not apply to iPad?
The releases shared several app and system changes, but platform-specific features did not automatically transfer to iPad. Journal was one example. Other iPhone-oriented additions included the Translate function for the iPhone 15 Pro Action Button and spatial-video capture, which depended on iPhone 15 Pro camera hardware and was intended for viewing on Apple Vision Pro. The release rundown distinguishes the iPhone additions from shared changes.

What iPad users could use for journaling then
In December 2023, iPad owners could record entries with Apple’s built-in tools, though neither was a like-for-like replacement for Journal.
- Apple Notes works for typed entries, handwriting, drawings, scans and attachments, organized in folders. It is a general-purpose notes app, not a dedicated diary with Journal’s prompt-and-entry design.
- Freeform suits visual pages, sketches and mixed-media mood boards, but is not primarily a chronological journal.
- Third-party apps may offer diary-specific features such as templates, tagging, search, encryption or cross-device syncing. Day One was a notable option: Apple cited its developer in the Journal announcement and noted its integration with the Journaling Suggestions API. Check an app’s current privacy policy and subscription terms before using it for personal entries.
What Apple said about Journal privacy
Apple said Journal suggestions were generated on device and that users controlled which suggestions became entries. It also said entries were encrypted when an iPhone was passcode-locked and end-to-end encrypted in iCloud. Those statements describe Apple’s Journal design; they should not be assumed to apply to other journaling apps. Apple’s announcement provides its account of the app’s privacy protections.

Journal eventually arrived on iPad
The iPadOS 17.2 omission was not permanent. Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature materials list Journal on iPad, with Apple Pencil handwriting and sketches, multiple journals, map views and more flexible layouts. Suggestions created on iPhone can sync securely to iPad. These later features belong to iPadOS 26, not to the 17.2 release. Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature document outlines the iPad Journal experience.
