Which works better depends on your setup. A supported iPad running iPadOS 26 offers Apple’s movable, resizable Windowed Apps mode, alongside Stage Manager. Samsung DeX offers a desktop-style workspace on selected Galaxy devices, including tablets, and can also connect compatible devices to a monitor or TV. Choose by the specific tablet, software version, apps, preferred input and whether you need an external display—not by a universal device ranking.
How the two workflows differ
Apple’s current iPad multitasking is not one fixed interface. In iPadOS 26, Windowed Apps lets you move and resize app windows, minimize or close them, and arrange multiple windows. Stage Manager is a separate option for managing app windows. Apple documents both modes, but availability and external-display features depend on the iPad model.

Samsung describes DeX as a desktop-style workspace. As Samsung support puts it, “Samsung DeX lets you connect your phone or tablet to a monitor or TV so you can view your device’s screen on a larger display.” On selected Galaxy tablets, DeX can also run on the tablet itself; supported setups may use touch, S Pen, keyboard or mouse.

Window arrangement and switching
iPad: Windowed Apps and Stage Manager
With Windowed Apps enabled, you can move and resize windows rather than treating each app as a full-screen view. Apple also describes opening another app and using multiple windows in some apps. Stage Manager offers a different window-management mode; it should not be treated as simply another name for Windowed Apps.

To turn on Windowed Apps, open Settings > Multitasking & Gestures and select the windowed option. The exact available choices depend on iPadOS and model.
Samsung: DeX
DeX presents supported apps in a desktop-style workspace. It is the more relevant choice if you want to work with a keyboard and mouse in an interface designed around a larger display or tablet workspace. Samsung’s documentation describes the available modes and controls, but does not establish that DeX is universally easier or more productive than iPad windowing.

Multiple windows from one app
Apple documents multiple windows for some iPad apps, so this capability is app-dependent rather than guaranteed across every app. Check whether the apps you rely on support the window arrangement you want. The cited Samsung DeX guidance establishes the desktop-style workspace and input choices, but does not provide a comparable guarantee that every app supports multiple independent windows.
Touch, keyboard, mouse and S Pen
Both platforms can be used with touch, but their workflows can suit different input preferences. Apple’s window controls are available on supported iPads, and an optional keyboard or pointer can complement them. Samsung documents touch and S Pen as well as keyboard and mouse options for DeX; accessory and feature support varies by device. Neither workflow makes a keyboard mandatory for every use.

Using the tablet screen or an external display
iPad external displays
Apple lists external-display capabilities by iPad model. Stage Manager support on the iPad and the ability to move apps and windows to an external display are separate compatibility questions; the latter applies to a narrower set of models. USB-C display resolution support also varies by model, and Apple notes that high-resolution displays may require a suitable high-bandwidth cable. Check Apple’s iPad external display support and Stage Manager compatibility guidance for your exact iPad.
Samsung DeX on a display
Samsung documents wired DeX through a DeX or HDMI cable and wireless connections for supported devices and displays. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or compatible cable is relevant only if your Galaxy device supports that connection; wireless use likewise depends on device and display compatibility. Confirm the setup before buying accessories.

Compatibility checks before choosing
Compatibility is often the deciding factor, especially if you are buying a tablet or accessories for a particular workflow. Check these items for the exact device rather than relying on a product-family name:

- Tablet model: Confirm that it supports the iPad windowing mode or Samsung DeX form you plan to use.
- Software version: Check the installed iPadOS or One UI version, since feature availability can change with updates.
- Apps: Verify that your essential apps support the windows and interactions you need.
- Input and accessories: Confirm keyboard, mouse, S Pen, keyboard-cover and cable compatibility for the model.
- External display: Check whether your device supports the intended wired or wireless connection and the display resolution you need.

DeX for PC is a separate, limited case
Do not assume that DeX for PC is available just because a Galaxy device supports DeX on a tablet screen or external display. Samsung says DeX for PC is not supported on devices released with or updated to One UI 7 or later. Samsung points users to Link to Windows for some PC-connected tasks; that is a separate feature, not DeX for PC.
Which should you choose?
Choose iPad windowing if…
- You already use a supported iPad and want Apple’s documented movable, resizable app windows.
- You prefer a workflow built around the iPad screen and want to choose between Windowed Apps and Stage Manager where available.
- Your required apps work well with the window arrangement you need.
Choose Samsung DeX if…
- You have a compatible Galaxy tablet and want a desktop-style workspace, particularly with a keyboard and mouse.
- You want the option of using DeX on a supported tablet or connecting a compatible device to a monitor or TV.
- Your chosen wired or wireless display setup is supported by both the device and display.
If you are deciding between devices, verify the exact model and software version first, then check app support, input accessories and any external-display requirement. Official feature documentation establishes what each system supports, not an objective usability winner; the better fit depends on the way you work.
