Start with the school’s requirements, not the device brand. An iPad can suit schoolwork when its required apps and policies support it; a Chromebook may be the more straightforward fit when the school expects a laptop-style device with a built-in keyboard. Compare the exact apps, management setup, accessories, and total offer before choosing—neither platform is a universal winner.
Compare the school setup before choosing
Ask the school which learning platform, testing software, accessibility tools, file workflows, and student accounts the device must support. Then verify those requirements on the specific models under consideration. App availability can differ between platforms, and the available information does not establish a complete, current app-by-app compatibility list.

The school’s account and device policies matter too. A device that works well for personal use may not fit a school’s deployment or account rules. If the school issues devices, ask whether students may use their own and what restrictions apply.
| Question | iPad | Chromebook |
|---|---|---|
| How is it used? | Tablet with touch input; a keyboard case is an optional configuration. | Laptop-style device with a built-in keyboard, as described in Google’s Chromebook education PDF. |
| Which apps and services work? | Check each required app and school account workflow on the exact iPad and school setup. | Google’s education PDF describes access to Google productivity and collaboration tools, Chrome Web Store apps, Google Apps Marketplace content, and the web. It is historical context, not a definitive current catalog. |
| How is school management handled? | Apple documents Apple School Manager working with a device-management service for configuration and app and book distribution. | Confirm the school’s current Chromebook management setup with its administrator; the cited Google PDF does not establish current administration features or licensing. |
| What does a comparable configuration cost? | Apple’s September 9, 2026 U.S. institution price list includes one $567.95 bundle example; details below. | A current universal device or licensing price is not established here. Google’s $20-per-device-per-month figure is historical, not a current quote. |
Check app compatibility against real schoolwork
Do not assume that every iPad app has a Chromebook equivalent, or that a web version works identically to an app. Make a list of the tools the student actually needs—such as the school’s learning platform, assessment software, assistive technology, and file-sharing workflow—and ask the school to confirm them on its managed devices.

For institutions using Apple devices, Apple says eligible education organizations can use Apple School Manager to acquire apps in volume and assign them to devices or users. Apple also says eligible organizations can access special pricing on purchases of 20 or more app copies. That condition applies to app licensing, not to a general discount on devices.
Decide whether a built-in keyboard matters
A Chromebook is a laptop-style device with a built-in keyboard. An iPad is a tablet, so adding a keyboard case is a separate configuration choice and can increase its total cost. Apple’s U.S. education price list includes iPad configurations bundled with rugged keyboard cases, including Logitech Rugged Combo 4.
For frequent typing
If schoolwork involves long essays, spreadsheets, or other sustained typing, have the student try the specific keyboard and software workflow if possible. The cited sources establish a configuration difference, not a typing-speed or comfort advantage for either platform.

For touch, drawing, or handwriting
If the work relies on touch interaction, drawing, or handwriting, assess the iPad configuration and the school-required apps. Confirm that the required workflow is supported under the school’s policies rather than assuming that the tablet format alone will make it suitable.
Check keyboard-case fit
If considering an iPad keyboard case, confirm compatibility with the exact iPad generation and model before buying. A case that fits one iPad is not automatically suitable for another.
Understand what school device management covers
Apple describes a workflow in which Apple School Manager works alongside a device-management solution. Apple says schools can remotely configure deployed devices, manage settings, and purchase and distribute apps and books. Its support guidance also describes assigning and installing apps wirelessly and retaining control of purchased licenses, including revoking and reassigning them.

For Chromebook administration, ask the school’s IT administrator what system it currently uses and what that setup allows. Specifically, ask what students can change, what the school can deploy, and what happens to access and assigned apps when a student leaves. The available Google education PDF includes a historical description of cloud-based management, but it does not establish current policy controls, licensing, filtering, or monitoring capabilities.

Apple’s U.S. institution price list dated September 9, 2026 lists an iPad Wi-Fi 128GB bundle with Logitech Rugged Combo 4 and two-year AppleCare+ for Schools at $567.95. This is an example from an institutional price list, not a universal school quote or a general retail price; Apple notes that products and prices may change.
A Google for Education PDF, approximately 2.1 years old as of September 2026, states “Starting at $20/device per month” for a package described as including Chromebook hardware, the operating system, updates, and cloud-based management. Treat that as a historical figure, not a current offer. Google’s current Workspace for Education licensing guidance says some pricing depends on the country and directs institutions to a reseller or Google representative. A universal current Google education subscription price is therefore not established here.

Request like-for-like quotes
Ask the school or seller to quote the same buyer, term, and support assumptions for each option. Include:
- Device model and storage or memory configuration
- Keyboard and protective case, if needed
- Warranty or accidental-damage coverage
- Device management and any required licensing
- Paid apps the student needs
- Support arrangements and replacement cycle
Without those details, a device-only price and a bundled institutional price are not a fair comparison.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Get the school’s requirements. Confirm required apps, testing tools, accounts, accessibility features, file workflows, and rules for personal devices.
- Verify the exact models. Ask the school to check each required workflow on the device and management setup the student would actually use.
- Choose the right typing setup. Decide whether a built-in Chromebook keyboard or an iPad with a separate keyboard case better fits the student’s work.
- Ask the administrator about management. Find out what the school can deploy or restrict, what students can change, and what happens to accounts and apps when they leave.
- Compare complete current quotes. Include accessories, coverage, management, licensing, paid apps, and support; do not use the historical Google monthly figure as a current price.
- Confirm accessory compatibility. Match any iPad keyboard case to the exact iPad generation and model.
