iOS is Apple’s operating-system platform for iPhone; Android is an operating system used across phones from multiple manufacturers and other kinds of devices. The practical difference is not simply Apple versus Google: Android implementations can vary by manufacturer, while both platforms have their own app ecosystems, controls and device-support arrangements.
What are iOS and Android?
They are operating-system platforms, not phone brands. iOS is Apple’s platform for iPhone, with development tools and documentation provided by Apple Developer. Android is used on a wide array of devices. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) describes it as “an operating system for a wide array of devices with different form factors” in its AOSP overview.

That distinction matters when choosing a phone: iOS points to Apple’s iPhone platform, whereas Android phones are made by different manufacturers and may differ in hardware, interface and included services.

Why Android phones can differ from one another
AOSP publishes Android source code for customization and porting. Manufacturers can build their own implementations, so Android phones may differ in appearance, features and bundled software. Google’s Android Compatibility program sets requirements intended to preserve compatibility with third-party apps while allowing manufacturers to differentiate their products.

Using Android source does not automatically give a device Google Play or Google Mobile Services. A device must meet compatibility requirements to seek Google Play access, and compatibility alone does not guarantee that access, according to the AOSP compatibility FAQs.
What this means for apps and services
When comparing actual phones, check whether the apps and services you depend on are available and work as expected on each specific device. Also consider how well the phone fits your existing computer, watch, accessories and messaging habits. The platform name alone does not answer every compatibility question—especially across different Android manufacturers and device configurations.

How privacy and security fit into the comparison
Both platforms document privacy and security features, but vendor documentation is not a neutral head-to-head safety test. Apple describes permission controls, including controls for location access, in its iOS, iPadOS and watchOS privacy guidance, and outlines layered platform protections in Apple Platform Security. Android documentation describes security features based on the Linux kernel and an application sandbox in its system and kernel security overview. These descriptions do not establish that one platform is categorically safer.

How to choose between an iPhone and an Android phone
There is no universal winner. Compare the particular models you are considering, not just the operating-system labels:
- Price and size: Compare the total device price and available sizes for the models in your budget.
- Apps and services: Confirm that essential apps and services work on the phone you plan to buy.
- Your existing devices: Consider compatibility with your computer, watch, accessories and the people or services you message most.
- Customization: Decide how much control you want over interface details and default apps.
- Privacy controls: Compare the controls on each model and review the policies of your frequently used apps.
- Updates: Check the operating-system and security-update commitment for the exact handset and region. Android support varies by manufacturer and model; there is no single support period that applies to every Android phone.
Prices, features and update commitments are model- and region-specific, so verify them with the manufacturer or retailer before deciding.
