For most iOS projects, let Xcode manage signing automatically. Use manual signing when you need deliberate control over certificates, profiles, or registered devices. The key distinction is that a certificate identifies who signs an app, while a provisioning profile authorizes that identity for a particular app and development or distribution route. Renewing or replacing one does not automatically mean you must replace the other.
How certificates and provisioning profiles work together
A signing certificate establishes a signing identity and is associated with a private key. A provisioning profile connects an app’s identifier and signing requirements to an allowed use, such as development, registered-device distribution, or App Store Connect submission. Profile requirements therefore vary by workflow; a certificate and a profile are not interchangeable.

Apple describes development certificates as belonging to individuals and distribution certificates as belonging to the team. Xcode 11 and later supports unified development and distribution certificates across platforms. Creating a distribution certificate is limited to the team’s Account Holder or Admin. Choose the signing path for your app

Apple’s instructions cover development profiles, Ad Hoc profiles, and App Store Connect profiles. An App Store Connect provisioning profile contains one distribution certificate.

Automatic or manual signing in Xcode?

In Xcode, open the project, select the app target, choose Signing & Capabilities, select the correct team, and enable Automatically manage signing for the usual automatic workflow. Apple documents both approaches in its guide to distributing apps to registered devices. Xcode can also update profiles in relevant export workflows.
For manual signing, create or select the profile that matches the app’s distribution route, App ID, certificate, and—where applicable—registered devices. Apple’s Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles account utility can be managed through the account interface, Xcode, or APIs.

Create or replace signing assets without mixing up the steps
- Identify the destination. Decide whether the build is for local development, testing on registered devices, Ad Hoc distribution, or App Store Connect. This determines the profile type and certificate needed.
- Check the team and your role. Confirm the project uses the intended Apple Developer team. If creating a distribution certificate, ensure the action is performed by an Account Holder or Admin.
- Choose automatic signing for a standard Xcode workflow. In the app target’s Signing & Capabilities, select the team and enable Automatically manage signing. Review the signing status Xcode reports.
- For manual development signing, assemble the required profile. Choose a development profile, the App ID, one or more development certificates, and the registered device or devices.
- For App Store Connect, use the matching profile. Choose an explicit App ID and a distribution certificate. The profile contains one distribution certificate.
- For Ad Hoc distribution, include the intended devices. Choose the App ID and distribution certificate, then select the registered devices that should be authorized.
- Install or select the profile and check the target’s signing settings. Confirm the profile, team, certificate, and App ID align with the intended build destination.
What to do when a certificate expires or changes
Do not assume every current iOS certificate has the same validity period. Apple’s current guidance cited here explains certificate roles and when profiles need regeneration, but does not establish one universal current term for all certificate types. A legacy Apple guide described a one-year validity period for a particular distribution certificate; that historical figure should not be applied to current certificate types or workflows. Apple’s profile guidance covers editing, downloading, deleting, and regenerating profiles. With automatic signing, Xcode may handle the update, but it can retain a locally cached profile that already satisfies the project’s requirements.

After replacing a certificate, verify that the signing configuration and profile point to an available, appropriate identity. Regenerating a profile is necessary when the profile is expired or invalid, or when its authorized certificate or app configuration no longer matches; it is not a synonym for renewing a certificate.

The certificate alone is not the complete signing identity: signing depends on its associated private key. Limit access to signing identities to people and systems that need them, and keep any backup of a private key protected according to your organization’s security practices. Do not distribute private keys casually or treat a downloaded profile as a substitute for the key.

- Confirm the selected Apple Developer team and app target.
- Check that the App ID and enabled capabilities match the app.
- Use the profile type that corresponds to the build’s destination.
- For registered-device profiles, confirm the intended devices are included and registered.
- For manual signing, confirm the selected profile authorizes the selected certificate.
- If Xcode reports a signing problem after a profile or certificate change, refresh or regenerate the profile as appropriate, then check the target’s signing settings again.
