An iOS mobile device is a mobile device that runs Apple’s iOS operating system. In current usage, the clearest example is an iPhone. An iPad that runs iPadOS is not an “iOS device” under Apple’s terminology.
What does “iOS mobile device” mean?
The phrase combines two things: a physical mobile device and the operating system it uses. Apple defines an “iOS device” as a mobile device that uses iOS. A device is not an iOS device just because it is mobile or made by Apple; it must run iOS.

Apple advises against using “mobile device” by itself to mean an iOS device, since that phrase can also describe devices made by other companies. When the device is an iPhone, naming it directly is usually clearer.

Not when it runs iPadOS. Apple distinguishes iPadOS devices from iOS devices, so “iOS device” should not be used as a generic term for iPads. The useful distinction is iPhone and iOS versus iPad and iPadOS.

How can you check whether an iPhone runs iOS?

Open Settings on the iPhone.

Tap General, then About.

Check the listed software version and model name. Apple identifies this screen as the place to find those details.
