What an App Store screenshot generator actually does
A generator is workflow software, not a replacement for your app build. It normally combines captured interface images with a background, device frame, headline, subhead, branding and localization variants, then exports files for App Store Connect.
- Capture: obtain representative screens from a simulator, test device or another controlled rendering environment.
- Compose: place the screen in a device frame or layout, add concise benefit-led copy and maintain a consistent visual system.
- Localize: replace captions and, where necessary, the captured interface for every language you submit.
- Export: produce opaque JPEG, JPG or PNG files at Apple-accepted dimensions.
- Validate and upload: check each display target and locale in App Store Connect before submission.
Search results mention browser-based, open-source, macOS and design-oriented tools, but the available evidence does not establish a current, apples-to-apples winner on features, privacy, export correctness or price. Evaluate any specific vendor against the criteria below rather than assuming a “best” generator.

Apple’s current screenshot rules
Apple allows one to 10 screenshots for a display target and locale. Uploads may be .jpeg, .jpg or .png, and images cannot contain an alpha channel or transparency. Apple lists dimensions by device family and display class for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch. The list changes as the product lineup changes, so use the current specification page immediately before export.

If the interface is identical across device sizes and localizations, Apple says you can provide only the highest-resolution screenshots required and App Store Connect will scale them down. That condition matters: if text wraps, controls move, imagery changes or localized copy alters the layout, create and upload separate assets instead. Media Manager lets you add screenshots for other device sizes and localizations when scaled versions are unsuitable.
Screenshot uploads are available in App Store Connect for eligible statuses including Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected and Developer Rejected. The App Store Connect API screenshot resource supports uploading and downloading images for an app locale and display target. Apple warns that some screenshot sizes are required for review submission; omitting one can produce a submission error.
Plan your device and localization matrix first
Write a matrix before opening a generator. Each row should identify a locale and each column a display target your app supports. Mark whether the UI is genuinely identical or needs its own capture. This prevents a late discovery that a translated headline no longer fits or that an iPad layout differs from iPhone.

Do-it-yourself generation workflow
1. Capture a deterministic source screen
Use a release-like build with stable sample data, a fixed account state and no transient alerts. Capture the screens that communicate the product’s primary value in a logical order. Keep the original, uncropped captures so you can recompose them for another device class or language.

2. Decide the message hierarchy
Give every frame one job: state the user benefit in a short headline, show the relevant interaction, and remove decorative elements that compete with the interface. Keep type large enough to read in the App Store listing on a phone. Use the same caption position, margins and color treatment across the set.
3. Build a reusable layout
Create one master composition per display class. Define guides for the safe area, device frame, headline, supporting line and legal or brand marks. Keep the app screen itself crisp and avoid scaling a low-resolution capture upward. A reusable master makes later language changes less error-prone.
4. Produce localization variants
Duplicate the master for each App Store language. Replace captions with reviewed translations, then check line breaks, punctuation, numerals, date formats and reading direction. Re-capture the interface when the app itself changes language or when text expansion alters the layout. Never leave a source-language label inside an otherwise localized image.

5. Export opaque files at Apple’s dimensions
Choose the exact pixel dimensions listed for the target display class. Flatten layers and export JPEG, JPG or PNG without transparency. Preserve a lossless working file separately, but upload only the flattened image. Name files with locale and target information, for example en-US_iphone_primary_01.png, so reviewers and automation can identify them.
6. Validate before upload
- Confirm the pixel dimensions against Apple’s live specification page.
- Open the exported file and verify that no corner, shadow or background is transparent.
- Check that text is legible at listing size and that screenshots are ordered as a narrative.
- Verify the locale, display target and screenshot count (one to 10).
- Inspect every localized variant for clipping, overflow and untranslated interface text.
- Keep the original capture and composition source so a rejected asset can be corrected without starting over.
7. Upload in App Store Connect
Open your app in App Store Connect, choose the app information area for the relevant platform and locale, and add screenshots to the matching display target. Use Media Manager when you need to add independent sizes or languages instead of accepting Apple’s scaled versions. If you automate uploads, map each file to the correct locale and display target through Apple’s screenshot API and handle the required-size validation response before submission.

How to evaluate a generator
Whether you use a design application, a browser tool or an internal script, check these capabilities before committing confidential app screens:
- Dimension coverage: current iPhone and iPad targets, plus any Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro or Apple Watch targets you support.
- Batch output: the number of screens, locales and device targets that can be exported in one operation.
- Editable layouts: reusable templates, device frames, text overlays, safe-area guides and per-locale overrides.
- Validation: warnings for wrong dimensions, transparency, missing files or unsupported formats.
- Privacy: whether source images leave your machine and how shared projects are controlled.
- Automation: an API, command-line interface or export manifest that can run in CI after a build.

Performance, reliability and cost decisions
Keep one high-resolution master per genuinely different layout, then derive smaller outputs rather than enlarging them. Generate locales in parallel only after the source copy is approved; otherwise every correction multiplies the work.
