Apple’s announced iOS 27 Siri has a plausible advantage over an assistant confined to its own app: it can work with context already on your device, such as what is on screen and information available through Apple’s system capabilities. That could make an assistant more useful for tasks tied to your messages, photos or current activity. It does not prove Siri is more accurate or better overall than ChatGPT or other assistants.
What Siri’s potential advantage actually is
An assistant’s answer is only as relevant as the context it can use. A chatbot that sees only what you type may need you to copy in a message, describe an image or explain which document you mean. Apple’s September 2026 announcement describes Siri AI as using a system orchestrator to access capabilities including the Spotlight index and App Toolbox, which Apple says operate entirely on-device. It also describes visual and conversational features, including a camera-integrated Siri mode on iPhone and visual capabilities on iPad, Mac and Vision Pro. Former Siri AI researcher Željko Mrkšić told Tom’s Guide that “OS-level access to email, messages, photos, whatever’s on your screen, is exactly the context that makes an AI assistant useful, more than any app-based chatbot can get without additional connectors.” That is an expert’s explanation of why operating-system integration could matter, not a comparative test showing that Siri beats other assistants. Why system context can make an assistant feel more useful
With suitable access, an assistant may be able to respond to a request that refers to something already visible or available in the system, rather than making you supply all the background again. Apple’s announcement also describes conversational history synced through iCloud. Together, these design choices point toward an assistant that can connect a conversation to device features and context.

That is a different claim from saying Siri has better reasoning, more reliable answers or broader knowledge. The available sources do not provide a same-task comparison with ChatGPT or other assistants. A fair comparison would need to look separately at which personal and on-screen information each assistant can use, what permissions and data handling apply, what system actions it can take, where and on which devices it is available, and how reliably it completes the same tasks.
Context also makes privacy and permission boundaries matter
Access to personal or on-screen information can reduce the work of explaining a request, but it raises an obvious question: what information is processed, and where? Apple describes multiple processing paths rather than saying every Siri AI request stays offline. Its privacy page says requests can be handled on-device or through Private Cloud Compute; it also says some features require real-time input from Apple servers and that information such as location may be sent to improve accuracy. Apple states: “The data being processed in Private Cloud Compute is not stored and is not accessible to Apple.” That is Apple’s description of its privacy design, not independent verification of how the system performs in every case. The practical distinction is that local processing, Private Cloud Compute and requests needing real-time server input are not interchangeable; an offline description for dictation should not be read as a promise that all Siri AI features work offline.
Who can use Siri AI, and where
Apple says Siri AI is rolling out in beta in English on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27. A device must support Apple Intelligence and be set to a supported language. Apple lists iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and specified iPad, Mac, Vision Pro and Apple Watch models as Apple Intelligence-compatible; that compatibility list does not guarantee every Siri AI feature on every listed device. Check Apple’s current feature and device availability details before assuming a particular model supports a particular capability.

Regional availability is also limited. Apple says Siri AI is initially unavailable on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS in the EU, though it is available there on macOS and visionOS. In June, Apple said it had no current timeline for iOS and iPadOS availability in the EU. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, said the company was “deeply disappointed” that EU users would not have Siri AI on iPhone or iPad with the software releases later that year, and said Apple hoped eventually to bring it to the EU while engaging with regulators. Apple also says Siri AI and other new Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while it addresses regulatory requirements. These rollout details can change, so availability should be checked against Apple’s current regional information rather than inferred from the operating-system version alone. Daily limits may affect heavier use
Apple says server-side features, including Siri AI, may have daily usage limits. The limits can vary with the feature, request complexity, system demand and other factors; Apple has not provided a fixed quota or price in the cited information. It says expanded access will be available for a fee in the future, without stating the fee.
