What’s new in Messages in iOS 27?
The changes address five everyday tasks: writing, finding conversations and media, sharing, recovering from interruptions, and keeping conversations organized. Most affect Messages generally; the inline-reply and media-reaction changes below are specifically described for RCS conversations with Android users.

How do the writing and suggestion features work?
1. Context-aware suggestions
Messages can suggest an action based on what someone says. For example, a request for a photo may prompt a search for relevant images, while a mention of an event or errand may surface an option to add it to Calendar, Reminders, or Notes. Apple’s iOS 27 overview specifically confirms suggestions to search for a photo or add a calendar event with a tap. These are suggested actions, not automatic changes to your apps.
2. Write with Siri and Smart Reply
The guide describes tools for composing with Siri, proofreading, and getting feedback, alongside Smart Reply suggestions tailored to a user’s writing style. Apple says Write with Siri can draft text or give feedback and can match writing style, punctuation, and tone in Messages and Mail. Apple identifies English availability for the Apple Intelligence experience described on its overview page; that does not establish availability for every language or device.

3. Siri actions in Messages
The guide says Siri can search message-related content such as images, videos, links, addresses, and phone numbers, draft replies, and act on information—for example, adding an event date mentioned in a message to Calendar. These are described capabilities, not a guarantee that Siri will find or interpret every item correctly.
4. Drawing in a conversation
To make a drawing, open the plus menu beside the text field and choose the drawing interface. The guide describes pen, marker, highlighter, eraser, and color options, so a quick sketch can be sent without leaving the conversation.

5. Updated Genmoji creation
The Genmoji interface is described as supporting iterative edits, image or person inputs, and changes to style. It gives users more ways to refine a generated character rather than relying on a single prompt.

How do I stop accidentally recording audio in Messages?
6. Remove or change the audio control
- Open Settings.
- Tap Messages.
- Tap Show in Text Field.
- Choose None to remove the control, or select Record Audio or Start Dictation if you prefer one of those options.
Choosing None removes the right-side audio control from the text field, which can reduce accidental voice-message recordings. It does not disable every audio-related feature in Messages.

7. Grouped Tapback notifications
When several people respond to a message with Tapbacks, their alerts are consolidated into one notification rather than arriving as separate alerts for each reaction. This reduces notification clutter in active group conversations.

8. Automatic retry after a failed send
The guide reports that Messages automatically retries a failed send, reducing the need to retry manually. A retry is not a delivery guarantee: a message may still fail if the underlying connection or service problem continues.

9. Sending can continue in the background
Photos, videos, and text can continue sending in the background and resume when connectivity returns, according to the guide and its June 2026 roundup. The feature is intended to make an interruption less disruptive; it does not mean every message will be delivered immediately or successfully.
10. Improved syncing across Apple devices
The guide describes faster, more reliable syncing of messages, read states, reactions, and attachments across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. It is a reported improvement, not a promise that every device will update instantly in every network condition.

How do I search old Messages and find media?
11. Search by phone number or nickname
Messages search can use a phone number or a contact nickname, giving you additional ways to locate a conversation when you do not remember its exact wording or saved contact name.
12. Find offloaded media and recent camera captures
Search can surface photos and videos that have been offloaded from local storage; the guide says those items also display thumbnails. Photos taken shortly before opening Messages are also more likely to appear promptly in the picker. These refinements make media easier to locate, but do not imply that every item is stored locally or instantly available at full resolution.
Can I reply to a specific Android text in Messages?
13. Inline replies and reactions in RCS conversations
For RCS conversations with Android users, the guide describes starting an inline reply with a long press and seeing emoji reactions directly on images and videos. These behaviors are scoped to RCS; they should not be assumed for every carrier, messaging protocol, or conversation. The guide also reports faster loading and scrolling in large conversations, and a broader set of Genmoji creation controls described above.

Apple’s overview confirms contextual suggestions and Write with Siri, and identifies English availability for the Apple Intelligence experience described there. The source descriptions do not establish a complete device-by-device compatibility list for every feature in this article. Check Apple’s current iOS 27 overview and support documentation for the specific iPhone, language, region, and feature you plan to use before relying on an Apple Intelligence capability.
