When an iPhone user reacted to an Android user’s message in an RCS chat, the Android phone could receive a separate text description—something like “Ryan loved an image”—instead of the reaction itself. iOS 27 reportedly fixes that mismatch: Android recipients now see the emoji reaction. Apple’s update also reportedly adds inline replies to RCS messages, helping keep a response attached to the message it answers.
What changed with Tapbacks in RCS chats?
Tapbacks are quick reactions, such as a heart or thumbs-up, that an iPhone user can apply to a message. Before the reported iOS 27 change, an Android recipient in an RCS conversation might see a separate text description of the reaction rather than the emoji attached to the message. That made a lightweight response look like another standalone message.

In its September 17, 2026 Messages feature recap, 9to5Mac says Android recipients now see the reaction itself instead of a text description. Android Authority reported the change in iOS 27 beta 2 in June 2026, describing reactions to messages and photos. The June report reflects beta-era behavior; the September recap is the more recent feature-specific coverage. 9to5Mac · Android Authority
Can iPhone users reply to a specific Android message now?
Reportedly, yes, in an RCS conversation. iOS 27 adds inline replies, so an iPhone user can respond to a particular message and see the reply presented with that message rather than only as the next item in the conversation’s timeline. 9to5Mac and Android Authority both describe this threaded-style improvement for RCS chats. 9to5Mac · Android Authority

These improvements are for RCS—not every green-bubble chat
Green bubbles are a visual shorthand for conversations that are not iMessage, but they do not identify the protocol on their own. The reported Tapback and inline-reply changes concern RCS chats. They should not be assumed to apply to every iPhone-to-Android conversation, including ones using SMS or MMS. Apple’s RCS overview explains the protocol separately from iMessage and SMS/MMS: About RCS messaging on iPhone.
Apple’s iOS 27 user guide says feature availability can vary by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier. The guide reviewed for this article does not itself document the RCS Tapback or inline-reply changes, so those specifics are reported by technology publications rather than confirmed on that guide page. Don’t confuse RCS reactions with encrypted RCS
Apple and Google announced a separate end-to-end encrypted RCS beta rollout on May 11, 2026. Apple said the rollout covered iOS 26.5 iPhones on supported carriers, while Google described Android support through the latest Google Messages. Apple said encrypted RCS chats would show a lock icon and that encryption was on by default as it rolled out. Those encryption details do not establish which carriers or devices support the iOS 27 reaction and reply changes. Apple Newsroom · Google Android Blog
Do you need a new iPhone?
No new hardware purchase is established as a requirement. The changes are software features, so the practical question is whether your current iPhone can install iOS 27 and whether RCS is available for your conversation. Check Apple’s current iOS 27 compatibility and availability information for your model, region, and carrier before considering a replacement; feature availability can vary. Apple’s iOS 27 guide.
