What’s new in iOS 27?
Apple’s headline change is Siri AI, accompanied by broader Apple Intelligence features. The update also includes new Photos tools, family safety features, Home enhancements, and system-level improvements. Apple describes these capabilities in its iOS 27 feature guide and September 14 launch announcement. Feature availability varies, so a feature described for iOS 27 may not work on every compatible iPhone or in every market.

Siri AI and Apple Intelligence
Apple says Siri AI is designed to handle more conversational requests, understand personal context, recognize what is onscreen, draw on broad world knowledge, and take additional actions across the system. Apple’s examples include using context from messages, email, and photos, responding to questions about onscreen content, and searching the web for current information. A dedicated Siri app can sync conversation history through iCloud so supported Apple devices can continue a conversation.

English was available first; French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish were planned for October 2026. Some server-dependent features have daily usage limits, which can vary.

Visual Intelligence
Visual Intelligence lets users ask questions or seek actions based on visual context. Apple describes asking Siri about onscreen material on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, as well as using the camera for visual queries. Its examples include splitting a bill and creating a custom Wallet pass. Some actions have regional or hardware restrictions: Apple Cash bill splitting, for example, is limited to eligible U.S. devices.
Photos and creative tools
Apple names Spatial Reframing, Extend, and an upgraded Clean Up tool among the Photos changes. Image Playground and Intelligent Photo Editing Tools are among the server-dependent features that may have daily usage limits. Apple says SynthID marking for most edited images will arrive in a later software update; whether an image is marked depends on the edits applied.

Family safety and parental controls
Apple presents new parental controls and child safety features as a major part of iOS 27. The company has not made every detail of their setup and operation clear in the launch material cited here, so check Apple’s current family safety documentation for the controls available on your device. Apple says Siri AI is unavailable to users under 13.

Apple says Apple Intelligence in Home can group related activity notifications, describe events in selected HomeKit Secure Video footage, and search clips by what happened. Supported HomeKit Secure Video cameras can stream and record in 4K. The 4K capability applies only to supported cameras, and Home features may vary by device and availability.

Performance and system improvements
Apple says iOS 27 improves responsiveness and cites testing involving app launches, Photos, AirDrop, and Files. The conditions were specific: app-launch testing used an iPhone 11 Pro Max in August 2026; Photos testing used an iPhone 15 with a 50,000-asset library in July 2026; AirDrop testing transferred multiple photos totaling 30 MB on an iPhone 16 Plus in July 2026; and Files testing used 10,000 JPG files on an M4 iPad Pro in July 2026. Those are test setups, not evidence that every device will see the same speed change. Apple notes performance can vary with configuration, settings, content, usage, software versions, environmental conditions, and other factors.
Which iPhones are compatible with iOS 27?
Apple’s compatibility guide lists iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max; the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 families in their listed variants; and iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. Use Apple’s current compatibility list to confirm your exact model and variant.

To identify your model, open Settings > General > About. To check for the update, open Settings > General > Software Update. The update may not appear immediately on every device during a rollout.

iOS 27 compatibility is not Apple Intelligence eligibility
Apple’s September launch announcement lists iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max as eligible for Apple Intelligence. Language and regional conditions also apply. That is a narrower set than the phones that can install iOS 27.

What to check before relying on a new feature
- Your iPhone model: Check Apple’s compatibility list; do not infer Apple Intelligence eligibility from iOS 27 compatibility.
- Your language: Siri AI and Apple Intelligence require supported language settings, and language availability can change over time.
- Your location: Apple says availability can vary by region; some actions, such as Apple Cash bill splitting, are limited to eligible U.S. devices.
- Your feature’s limits: Server-dependent features may have daily usage limits, and camera or HomeKit capabilities require supported hardware.
- Your software version: Some items, including SynthID marking for most edited images, are planned for a later software update rather than the initial feature set.
When did iOS 27 launch?
Apple previewed iOS 27 at WWDC on June 8, 2026, describing it as a free update planned for fall. On September 14, 2026, Apple announced that major updates, including iOS 27, were rolling out. Rollout timing can differ by device and region.
