Apple advises waiting a few days after an update, then checking Settings > Battery to see what is actually using power. If the drain continues, these seven checks can help you target the cause.
1. Give post-update activity a few days
After an iOS update, some tasks may continue in the background and affect battery life and thermal performance. Apple recommends waiting a few days and checking usage again. That is a reasonable first step if the update was recent, but it is not a guarantee that every battery problem will resolve on its own. Apple’s post-update battery guidance

2. Find out what is using power
Before changing multiple settings, look for the activity behind the drop:

- Review Daily Usage and App and System Activity.
- Check whether the usage is associated with a particular app or system activity, and look at on-screen time, background activity, notifications, and cellular coverage.

3. Reduce display power use
A bright display can use more battery. Lower brightness in Control Center or in Display & Brightness settings, and consider a shorter Auto-Lock interval so the screen turns off sooner when you stop using the phone. 4. Turn on Low Power Mode when you need extra runtime
Low Power Mode reduces some power use, but may slow certain tasks or pause some background functions. The path depends on your iPhone:

- iPhone 15 and later: Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
Depending on the model, it can reduce brightness, set Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, pause iCloud Photos, and turn off automatic downloads, email fetch, and Background App Refresh. Apple says Low Power Mode turns off when the iPhone reaches 80% charge or higher. Apple’s Low Power Mode instructions
5. Check Adaptive Power on supported iPhones
On models that support it, Adaptive Power can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode when the charge reaches 20%. Apple’s iOS 27 guide says it may be on by default on some supported models. To check, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode; availability and labels can vary by iPhone and software version. 6. Check whether cellular coverage is weak
Low signal or no mobile coverage can contribute to battery use. Check the Battery details for coverage-related activity before assuming the update is responsible. If 5G speeds do not noticeably improve your experience, Apple recommends using 5G Auto, which lets the iPhone use LTE when appropriate. Apple’s guidance on signal and battery use

- iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
If iOS displays a service message, Apple recommends having the battery serviced through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Changing settings cannot restore capacity lost through battery aging. Apple’s battery health and service guidance
