iOS 27 makes two long-requested changes to Apple Photos: you can create and export a customized slideshow from any selected photos or videos, and iCloud Shared Albums gain full-resolution media support. The update also adds more ways to edit and organize photos, though its new AI editing tools require a compatible iPhone.
What are the two major Photos upgrades in iOS 27?
Make a slideshow from any selection
Photos can now turn a selection of photos or videos into a slideshow, rather than limiting slideshow creation mainly to Memories. You can start with items you select or with an album or collection, then adjust the transition style, slide duration and music. There is also a loop option, and you can export the finished slideshow as a video file.
That makes the feature useful for more than browsing a generated highlight reel: you can choose the material, shape how it plays and save a video to share or keep. Apple’s [iOS 27 overview](https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-27/) describes the update’s broader Photos changes.
Share full-resolution photos and videos
iCloud Shared Albums now support full-resolution photos and videos, addressing a major limitation for groups that want to share original-quality media. Shared Albums also add emoji reactions and more flexible participant permissions, with contributions available from Android and Windows users.

Additional controls include upload links, recent-activity views, filters for photos versus videos, easier saving, and an option to have an album expire after 30 days. Together, these changes make Shared Albums more practical for events and groups whose members use different devices.
What else is changing in Photos?
AI-assisted editing
- Reframe, also called Spatial Reframing: Adjusts the apparent perspective of a photo using spatial information and AI. Touch and drag to change the angle.
- Extend: Expands a crop beyond the original image borders and generates content for the newly exposed area.
- Enhanced Clean Up: Removes larger objects and offers Fast, High Quality and Auto processing choices.
Apple describes Spatial Reframing and upgraded Clean Up as part of its new, easy-to-use AI photo-editing tools on its iOS 27 page.

Capture, metadata and organization
- Save a video frame: Capture an individual frame from a video as a photo.
- Add keywords and ratings: Apply keywords and a one-to-five-star rating, then filter by them.
- Find new Utilities folders: Captured by Me and Identity Documents give those items dedicated places.
- Prioritize iCloud uploads: Sync Immediately gives uploads priority for the day.
- Browse collections: Collections render faster, and Shared Album invitations are easier to manage.
Which iPhones support the new tools?
The eligibility for AI editing is narrower than the eligibility for general Photos improvements. MacRumors reports that Reframe, Extend and the enhanced Clean Up tools require Apple Intelligence-capable hardware, including iPhone 15 Pro and later. General iOS 27 Photos performance and organization changes are supported on iPhone 11 and later.

Apple cautions that feature availability can vary by iPhone model, region, language and carrier. Server-based Apple Intelligence features may also have daily usage limits. A compatible phone therefore does not guarantee that every feature is available in every location or language.

What the update changes for sharing and storage
Full-resolution Shared Albums make it easier to pass around higher-quality originals, but they can also mean larger files for people who save media to their devices. The update’s new album controls—such as upload links, participant permissions and optional expiry—give groups more ways to manage who contributes and how long an album remains active.
Sync Immediately is a separate iCloud upload control: it prioritizes uploads for the day. It does not change the Shared Album’s resolution or replace the album’s participation settings.
