What’s new for RCS conversations in iOS 27?
Ryan Christoffel’s October 5, 2026 report for 9to5Mac identifies two RCS changes in Messages: inline replies and proper Tapback support. The report says both are part of RCS 2.7.

Inline replies keep a response attached to its message
Instead of leaving a reply to be inferred from its position in the chat, an inline reply shows which earlier RCS message it answers. That relationship is visible to iPhone and Android participants in the conversation, making it easier to follow a busy thread.

Tapbacks appear as reactions, not translated text
Tapbacks let someone react to a message with an emoji-style response. With the reported improvement, a reaction to media appears as a reaction rather than a fallback text such as “Ryan loved an image.” This gives the exchange clearer context without changing the underlying media message.

Which RCS features does Messages list?
9to5Mac relays that Apple’s iOS 27 user guide lists RCS capabilities including “read receipts, typing indicators, Tapbacks, inline replies, and high-resolution photos and videos.” The guide’s feature list describes the broader RCS experience; the reported iOS 27 additions highlighted here are inline replies and improved Tapbacks.
RCS can make messaging between iPhone and Android feel more capable, but it is not the same service as iMessage. The feature list should not be read as a promise that every RCS conversation or device will behave identically.

Will the RCS improvements work on every iPhone?
No universal availability guarantee follows from the feature announcement. Apple’s iOS 27 user guide cautions that new features and apps may vary by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier. RCS availability also depends on carrier support, and Apple’s cited support information does not provide a carrier-by-carrier or market-by-market list.

Other Messages changes—and a beta caveat
A September 17, 2026 9to5Mac roundup also describes a Drawing iMessage app for sketches and handwritten notes, consolidated notifications for multiple Tapbacks, and refinements such as retrying failed messages, faster message loading and cross-device syncing, media thumbnails, and search by phone number or nickname.
That roundup says personalized one-tap suggestions appeared in beta but were removed from the shipping version, with a return expected in a future update. Their later availability is not established here, so do not treat the beta feature as part of the confirmed shipping changes. Apple’s broader iOS 27 feature overview was published September 29, 2026.
