What changes in Apple Podcasts
The redesign separates two jobs that the old Up Next queue handled together. In beta testing, New Episodes appears first and gathers the latest releases from shows you follow. Continue Playing sits below it and collects episodes already in progress. This is a reorganization of the listening view, not merely a new name for the same queue.

Why the Up Next change matters
A single queue can make fresh releases and partly heard episodes compete for attention. The problem is practical: it can be hard to tell what is new, while an episode you paused may become difficult to find among other listening. New Episodes is designed to make recent releases more visible; Continue Playing gives unfinished listening a dedicated place.

That makes this a focused usability improvement rather than a new playback feature. The reports describe where episodes are organized, not changes to how playback itself works. Whether the redesign feels better will depend on how a listener uses their queue, but separating discovery from resuming is a direct response to those two common frustrations.
Will Podcasts remember unfinished episodes?
Continue Playing is intended to collect episodes you have begun and not completed, allowing you to find them again without searching through the new-release list. The beta reports establish this intended role; they do not spell out every edge case, such as how the app treats episodes played nearly to the end or how long an item remains in the section.

Is iOS 27.2 available yet?
As of October 2, 2026, iOS 27.2 is being beta tested. 9to5Mac reported on September 23 that Apple had begun testing the update and that an October public release was likely, but that is an expectation, not confirmation of a release date. The beta report also says iOS 27.1 is expected to be exclusive to iPhone Duo before software paths converge. Check Apple’s final release notes for confirmed availability and behavior rather than treating the beta report as a guarantee.

Apple’s creator documentation for the wider iOS 27 update describes several other Podcasts features: Search in Show, expanded video support, read-along transcripts, chapters, media links, and larger accessibility text sizes (AX1–AX5). These are broader iOS 27 changes, not the specific Up Next reorganization reported for iOS 27.2. Apple notes that feature availability can vary by country and region.
