How to add a word so your iPhone stops autocorrecting it
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
- Tap the add button.
- Type the spelling you want to preserve in Phrase.
- Leave Shortcut empty, then save the entry.

Why Text Replacement is the right place
iOS offers Text Replacement for both custom words and shortcuts, rather than presenting a separate general-purpose user-dictionary editor in this guide. A regular replacement pairs a phrase with a shortcut: for example, typing “omw” can enter “On my way!” Leaving Shortcut blank uses the same settings area for a different purpose—keeping a word or phrase from being corrected.
You can also reach Text Replacement while typing by touching and holding the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key, then opening Keyboard Settings and Text Replacement. The exact route may depend on the keyboard interface, so the Settings path above is the clearest option.

What to expect—and what Apple’s instructions don’t guarantee
- Apple documents the blank-shortcut method for words or phrases you don’t want corrected.
- The guide does not promise that the entry will override every app, third-party keyboard, language, or text field. If correction continues, check which keyboard and app field you’re using rather than assuming the setting applies universally.
- For certain Chinese and Japanese keyboards, Apple describes adding word-and-input pairs to the personal dictionary: Simplified Chinese Pinyin; Traditional Chinese Pinyin and Zhuyin; and Japanese Romaji and Kana.
- Apple says iCloud Drive can keep the personal dictionary up to date on other devices, but the guide does not specify how quickly changes sync.
Be careful before resetting the keyboard dictionary
Reset Keyboard Dictionary is not a targeted fix for one stubborn word. Apple says the reset deletes all custom words and shortcuts and returns the keyboard dictionary to its default state. Use it only if you intend to remove those saved entries.
