Install the newest iOS version Apple offers for your iPhone. If the phone offers iOS 27, that is the current major release. If you are staying on iOS 26, do not stop at 26.7: Apple lists iOS 26.7.1 as a security-fix update. Check Settings > General > Software Update for the version available to your device.
What is the difference between iOS 26.7 and iOS 27?
iOS 26.7 is a point release in the iOS 26 series; iOS 27 is the newer major release. Apple says iOS 26.7 adds Playlist Playground and Concerts in Apple Music, eight new emoji, other features, bug fixes and security updates. Apple lists iOS 26.7.1 after it, with security fixes. iOS 27 brings a new generation of Apple Intelligence features and Siri AI, but access depends on the iPhone and, for some features, language and region.

Apple announced that iOS 27 and its other major platform updates began rolling out on September 14, 2026. That makes iOS 27 the current major release, but your iPhone’s own Software Update screen determines which version Apple offers you.
Why should you update from iOS 26.7?
Apple’s iOS 26.7.1 security notice, released September 28, 2026, says the update addresses CVE-2026-86950 in CoreGraphics. Processing a maliciously crafted file could lead to arbitrary code execution; Apple says it addressed the issue with improved bounds checking.

Apple also says it was aware of a report that the flaw may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on iOS versions before iOS 27. This is not a claim that iPhone owners generally were targeted. It is a reason not to leave an offered security update uninstalled: if iOS 27 is unavailable on your phone, check for the latest compatible release instead of remaining on 26.7.
Will your iPhone support iOS 27 and its new features?
Apple’s current compatibility guide lists iOS 27 for iPhone 11 and later families, iPhone SE (2nd generation) and iPhone SE (3rd generation), as well as listed iPhone 18 models. Confirm your specific model and available update on the phone; Apple’s guide can change, and the on-device offer is the practical check.

Being able to install iOS 27 does not guarantee access to every feature. Apple says Apple Intelligence requires newer supported hardware, including iPhone 16 models or later and iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, with additional restrictions for some capabilities. Apple says feature availability can vary by model, region, language and carrier. Siri AI was described in Apple’s announcement as rolling out in beta in English.

Which version should you install in your situation?
- Your iPhone offers iOS 27: Install it if you want the current major release and its eligible features. Check Apple’s model, language and regional limitations for the features you care about.
- You want to remain on iOS 26: Update beyond 26.7 to at least the security-fix release Apple lists as iOS 26.7.1, or install a newer version offered under Software Update.
- Your iPhone does not offer iOS 27: Install the latest compatible version displayed under Settings > General > Software Update and verify the model against Apple’s compatibility guide.
- You rely on a critical app or are concerned about battery or speed: Check the app developer’s compatibility information and reports for your exact iPhone and software build. The cited sources do not establish a reliable independent iOS 26.7-versus-27 benchmark, so results for another model should not be treated as a prediction for yours.
How to check for the update
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Review the version shown for your device and install the newest version Apple offers. If iOS 27 is not listed, use the compatible update shown there rather than assuming the phone can install the major release.
