Here’s the practical, no-fluff reference for the iOS 18 launch date and exactly how to update when it’s available.
iOS 18 release date: when Apple launched it
Confirmed launch date
Apple released iOS 18 to the public on September 16, 2024. That’s the date Apple made the production update available for eligible iPhones over the air (OTA).

What that means for your device
Even with a fixed release date, you might not see the update instantly. Rollouts can stagger based on region, network conditions, and server load. If you don’t see it on day one, you typically still get it within the same release week.
Apple’s iOS launch schedule: where the date usually comes from
WWDC announcement window
Apple usually announces the upcoming iOS major version at WWDC in early June. For iOS 18, that announcement followed the standard cadence, with developer and public betas filling the months before the final release.
Public release window
Major iOS releases have historically landed in the mid-to-late September window. The iOS 18 public release on September 16, 2024 matches that pattern.
Carrier and regional rollout
After Apple flips the switch, carrier validation and regional infrastructure can slightly delay availability. Wi‑Fi performance and iPhone models can also influence download speed and whether the update appears immediately under Settings > General > Software Update.

Check over the air (OTA)
On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. If iOS 18 is available for your model, you’ll see an option to download and install.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and leave the screen on briefly.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Wait a minute, then tap Download and Install if you see iOS 18.
Check build notes and availability
If you’re tracking the exact update build, look for the version number shown on the Software Update screen (for example, 18.x). Apple sometimes issues quick follow-up patches after the initial release.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
How to update to iOS 18
Update directly on iPhone (Settings)
This is the most common route for most people because it’s fast and requires no computer.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install.
- If prompted, authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.
- Choose Install Now or enable scheduling (when shown).
Update using a Mac or Windows PC (Finder/iTunes)
If OTA fails, a computer-based update often succeeds. Apple’s tooling handles the download and install steps more reliably.
- On macOS, open Finder. On Windows (or older macOS), use iTunes.
- Connect your iPhone with a USB cable.
- Select your iPhone in Finder (or in iTunes).
- Choose Check for Update.
- Click Download and Update and follow the prompts.
Restore/upgrade with IPSW (advanced)
If you’re dealing with persistent boot loops, deep corruption, or you need to switch to a specific software build, you may use an IPSW-based restore. This is more advanced and can be destructive if you don’t back up properly.
General rule: use IPSW restore only when OTA/Finder/iTunes updates fail. Make a backup first.
Prerequisites before installing iOS 18
Storage requirements
Modern iOS updates usually require several gigabytes of free space. A practical rule is to keep at least 10–15 GB available to avoid “not enough storage” failures.
If you’re tight on space, remove large items first (Settings > General > iPhone Storage) and retry the download.

Backup checklist
Backups reduce risk if the update fails or you need to roll back apps/data.
- iCloud Backup: Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now.
- Computer backup: via Finder on macOS or iTunes on Windows.
For the most coverage, do a computer backup plus iCloud Backup if you have time.
Battery, Wi‑Fi, and power
Keep your iPhone plugged in during installation if possible. Weak Wi‑Fi can fail downloads mid-way; strong Wi‑Fi or a computer connection is more reliable.
Supported devices: who can install iOS 18
General compatibility rules
iOS major releases typically support a range of recent iPhone models and exclude older hardware that can’t meet performance/security requirements. Apple usually publishes the full list on its iOS release page and in the Software Update screen when you check compatibility.

Common problems when installing iOS 18 (and fixes)
Update stuck on Preparing Update
This usually points to network instability, a large pending download, or a temporary server issue.
- Try again on a different Wi‑Fi network.
- Restart the iPhone, then check Settings > General > Software Update again.
- If available, use a computer update via Finder/iTunes instead.
Error codes and what they usually mean
iOS updates often show an error like 100x/200x/300x (numbers vary). The pattern is more useful than the exact code because the fixes overlap.
- Network-related: switch Wi‑Fi, try again later, or use Finder/iTunes.
- Storage-related: free space and retry the download.
- Update integrity: delete the partially downloaded update (if your iPhone offers a cancel/delete option) and re-download.
Not enough storage
If the update requires more space, iOS may offer to temporarily remove items or offload apps (depending on your settings). You can also free space manually.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Delete large unused apps or videos.
- Retry the update download.
Battery drain or overheating
It’s normal for the device to warm up during installation, especially if the update is still downloading or unpacking. If it gets unusually hot:
- Keep it out of direct sunlight.
- Remove high-power cases if they trap heat.
- Let it cool, then retry on stable power (plugged in).
Apps break or features don’t show up
Sometimes the OS updates first, and app updates lag behind. If a feature appears missing, check whether the app has been updated to support iOS 18.
- Open App Store.
- Tap Updates.
- Install app updates, then reboot the iPhone.
iOS 18 vs. iOS 18 beta: what’s safe to install
Public beta vs. developer beta
If you’re wondering about dates, beta availability typically starts weeks to months before the public release. Developer betas are meant for app developers and can be more fragile.

Best Value
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Public betas are broader, but still experimental compared with the September production release.
When to wait for the full release
If you rely on your iPhone for work, banking, or travel, waiting for the full iOS 18 public release is the lower-risk choice. The initial public release is also when Apple focuses on stability ahead of scale.
FAQs about the iOS 18 release date and updating
Will iOS 18 install on every iPhone?
No. Compatibility depends on the iPhone model. The most reliable check is your own Settings > General > Software Update screen.
If I don’t see iOS 18 on September 16, what should I do?
Wait a few hours to a day and try again, ideally on strong Wi‑Fi. If it still doesn’t appear, use Finder/iTunes to update from a computer.
How long does the iOS 18 update take?
Install time varies by iPhone model and connection speed, but plan for 20–60 minutes for the full flow. Downloads can take longer depending on your network.
Should I update right away or wait for a patch?
If you need specific features, updating right after the public release is reasonable. If you’re risk-averse, wait for the first follow-up point release after the initial rollout.
Will my iPhone data be deleted?
An OTA update should keep your apps and data intact. Restoring via IPSW or recovery mode can be destructive if you don’t back up first.
Bottom Line
The iOS 18 release date was September 16, 2024. If it didn’t show up immediately, that’s usually a rollout timing issue—not a compatibility problem.
For the highest success rate, back up first, use stable Wi‑Fi, and if OTA fails, update via Finder/iTunes. That combination covers most real-world installation issues people run into during a major iOS rollout.
