It was the first Apple beta to expose Apple Intelligence features, but only as a limited, pre-release preview for developers—not a public iPhone update. Apple Intelligence also required supported hardware, language and region settings, enrollment approval and model downloads.
What Apple released on July 29, 2024
iOS 18.1 beta 1 opened a separate testing track for Apple Intelligence while the regular iOS 18 beta continued. Apple positioned the build for developers testing app compatibility and system integrations. The companion releases were iPadOS 18.1 beta 1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 beta 1. Apple’s iOS 18.1 SDK was distributed with Xcode 16.1; see the official release notes.

This was not the complete Apple Intelligence launch. The production iOS 18.1 update arrived on October 28, 2024, with the first public Apple Intelligence features, so beta 1 is now a historical release rather than a current installation target.

Which iPhones supported Apple Intelligence?
iOS 18 supported more iPhones than Apple Intelligence did. For the initial supported iPhone family, Apple listed the following models:
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
| Model | Apple Intelligence support |
|---|---|
| iPhone 15 Pro | Yes |
| iPhone 15 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone 16 | Yes |
| iPhone 16 Plus | Yes |
| iPhone 16 Pro | Yes |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus | No Apple Intelligence, despite supporting iOS 18 |
Apple later confirmed this supported list in its October 2024 availability announcement. Older iPhones could install compatible iOS 18 updates, but installing iOS 18.1 did not make them Apple Intelligence devices.
What worked in the first preview
After approval and model installation, beta testers reported an early set of system features. Availability could vary by build and account status.

What beta 1 did not include
Several WWDC demonstrations were absent or incomplete in the first developer build. Their absence did not mean Apple had cancelled them.
| Announced or expected capability | Status in beta 1 |
|---|---|
| Image Playground | Not included |
| Genmoji | Not included |
| Visual intelligence | Not included |
| Full personal-context Siri features | Not included in the demonstrated final form |
| Several advanced Siri actions | Not included or incomplete |
| ChatGPT integration | Planned as a later addition, not a beta 1 feature |
| Some transcription, Mail and notification capabilities | Arrived or matured in later builds |
Requirements beyond the operating-system update
Apple Intelligence access was conditional. Contemporary coverage of beta 1 reported a U.S. English requirement and a waitlist or approval step. Later Apple guidance describes the broader setup rules: the device and Siri languages must match a supported language, availability depends on region and feature, and free on-device storage is needed for downloaded models. See Apple’s current requirements at Apple Support.

How developers installed iOS 18.1 beta 1
- Back up the iPhone to iCloud or a computer. Apple recommends a backup before beta installation.
- Sign in on the iPhone with the Apple Account used on the Apple Developer website.
- Open Settings, then General, then Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates and choose iOS 18 Developer Beta.
- Return to Software Update and install the offered build.
- Keep the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi while it downloads and restarts.
- After rebooting, open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri to check enrollment and model-download status.
Apple’s supported path and backup guidance are documented at Apple Developer Support. Menu wording can change on newer iOS versions; the labels above describe the iOS 18 beta period.
If the beta does not appear
- Confirm the iPhone is eligible and already on a compatible iOS version.
- Check that the iPhone uses the same Apple Account associated with the Apple Developer website.
- Make sure Beta Updates is not set to Off or Public Beta.
- Accept any outstanding developer terms or account prompts.
- Do not attempt the unsupported direct transition from iOS 18 beta 5 to iOS 18.1 beta 1 noted in Apple’s release notes.
If Apple Intelligence is missing after installation
Installing iOS 18.1 alone did not guarantee immediate access. Check these causes in order:

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
- Verify that the phone is an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or an iPhone 16-series model.
- Make the device language and Siri language match a supported language; beta 1 coverage specifically reported U.S. English.
- Check region availability and Apple Intelligence enrollment or waitlist status.
- Allow the on-device model download to finish and confirm sufficient storage.
- Restart the iPhone, then revisit Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Remember that some advertised functions simply were not present in beta 1 and required later builds.
Should you install a developer beta?
It made sense for
- Developers testing an app against iOS 18.1 and the iOS 18.1 SDK.
- Owners of a compatible secondary iPhone who wanted early Apple Intelligence testing.
- Testers prepared to report bugs through Feedback Assistant.
- Teams validating Writing Tools, Siri behavior and system text interactions.
Waiting was safer for
- Anyone relying on a primary phone for work, travel or two-factor authentication.
- Users who prioritize battery life, reliability and broad app compatibility.
- Owners of iPhone 14, iPhone 15 or older models who mainly wanted Apple Intelligence.
- Anyone expecting the full WWDC feature set immediately.
- People unwilling to erase and restore the phone to downgrade.
Beta software can bring crashes, heat, battery drain, sluggishness, app incompatibility and inconsistent AI output. Apple’s release notes also documented known issues and migration limits; developers should review them before installing.
Downgrading and the beta branch split
Turning off Beta Updates stops future beta downloads; it does not immediately return the installed phone to a public release. Going back generally requires erasing and restoring the device, and a backup made on beta software may not restore to an older iOS version. Keep a pre-beta backup and follow Apple’s restore guidance at Apple Developer Support.

The separate 18.1 branch existed because Apple Intelligence needed additional testing. That split also explains why a phone on the ordinary iOS 18 beta could not always move directly to the first 18.1 developer build.
How the release aged
The first public beta followed the developer-only launch, and iOS 18.1 became generally available on October 28, 2024. Apple Intelligence availability continued to depend on language, region, device and feature, with additional capabilities arriving in later releases. Apple’s public-release details are listed by Apple Support.
The Bottom Line
iOS 18.1 beta 1 was a developer-only, limited Apple Intelligence preview from July 29, 2024. It required a supported iPhone—iPhone 15 Pro models or any iPhone 16—plus compatible language, region, enrollment and model downloads. Developers with a secondary device had a reason to test it; most iPhone owners were better served by waiting for the public release.
