Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Windows says a file is being used by another program, first identify what has it open and close that application normally. For a more direct file operation, IObit Unlocker offers unlock, delete, rename, move, and copy actions; Microsoft PowerToys File Locksmith instead focuses on showing which processes are using a selected file or folder. Use process termination only after identifying the process and saving any work it may contain.
What IObit Unlocker does—and what it cannot guarantee
IObit describes Unlocker as a Windows utility for files and folders that are occupied by a program or user. Its documented actions are Unlock, Unlock & Delete, Unlock & Rename, Unlock & Move, and Unlock & Copy. The quick-start guide says you can add items or drag and drop them, then select the intended action. IObit’s product page describes the utility as free; check the vendor’s current download and requirements before installing, because version and compatibility details can change.

Unlocking addresses a file or folder being held by a process. It does not establish that every “Access is denied” or sharing-violation message is caused by a lock. Permissions, system protection, or other Windows conditions may also prevent an operation, and IObit’s documentation does not promise to resolve every cause.
Choose a tool based on the job
| Need | Better fit | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Find which process is using a selected file or folder | Microsoft PowerToys File Locksmith | Shows accessible processes associated with the selection and offers an End task action. Processes running under another user may not appear unless File Locksmith is restarted as administrator. |
| Unlock and immediately delete, rename, move, or copy an item | IObit Unlocker | Its quick-start guide lists those direct file actions in addition to Unlock. |
| Investigate a broader copy, move, rename, or delete problem | Microsoft’s file and folder troubleshooter | An official troubleshooting route for the scenarios it covers; it is not documented as a universal locked-file detector. |
This is a difference in workflow, not a claim about relative speed, reliability, or success rates. Microsoft describes File Locksmith as a way to check which files are in use and by which processes from File Explorer’s context menu. See the Microsoft File Locksmith documentation for its current behavior and instructions.

Try the least disruptive fix first
- Save work and close likely applications. If the file is open in an editor, media player, archive utility, or another ordinary application, save changes and close it normally. Then retry the Windows operation.
- Use File Locksmith if you need to identify the holder. In File Explorer, right-click the file or folder and choose Unlock with File Locksmith. Review the listed process before taking action. If a process you expect is missing, Microsoft notes that processes running under another user may require restarting the utility as administrator to appear.
- End a task only when you understand the consequence. File Locksmith provides an End task action. Ending a process can discard unsaved work or interrupt an application; do not terminate an unfamiliar or system process simply to clear the message.
- Use IObit Unlocker for a direct file action. Follow the IObit Unlocker Quick Start Guide to add the target or drag it into the utility, then choose Unlock or the relevant combined action. Confirm the target and operation before proceeding, especially for deletion or moving.
- Escalate cautiously to Forced Mode. IObit states that “Forced Mode will terminate all related processes.” Save work first and identify what will be stopped; the guide does not establish that terminating any particular process is safe or that the file operation will always succeed.
Check Windows support and the utility’s current requirements
IObit’s product page currently lists version 1.3.0, a 2.13 MB file size, and compatibility with Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP. Those are vendor-published details, not independent certification or a guarantee that every listed configuration will work. Verify the current installer information on the official product page. IObit’s FAQ also contains older operating-system and hardware information, so do not assume its older requirements are current without checking the installer or vendor guidance.
Utility compatibility is separate from whether Windows itself receives security support. Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. If you are using Windows 10, that end-of-support status still matters even if a utility lists Windows 10 as compatible. Microsoft’s file and folder troubleshooter covers some copy, move, rename, and delete problems.

If the file remains inaccessible
- The item is still in use: close the application normally or use a process-inspection tool to identify its holder before ending a task.
- The message is an access denial: a process lock is only one possible cause. Check whether your account has permission to perform the operation and whether Windows protects the file or folder.
- The target is a system or application file: avoid forced termination or deletion unless you know what depends on it. These tools do not make protected files safe to change.
- A general file operation is failing: try Microsoft’s troubleshooter for the supported scenarios listed on its page. Its availability and coverage should not be read as a diagnosis of every locked-file case.
