What is the difference between clear and matching lip liner?
A clear or transparent liner deposits no visible colour. Brands describe it as a barrier around the lip contour, so it can pair with different lipstick and gloss shades without adding a colored outline. KIKO says its clear pencil can be used with any lipstick or gloss shade (KIKO).

A matching liner is pigmented, so it adds a visible contour. A shade close to your lipstick creates a coordinated outline; a shade near your natural lip colour gives subtler definition. Dr. Hauschka also describes applying colored liner over the whole lip as a base (Dr. Hauschka).

How do you apply lip liner?
For a pigmented liner
L’Oréal Paris recommends using short, light strokes along the natural lip line, starting near the centre and moving toward the corners. The brand also says filling in the lips with liner can extend wear. These are its application recommendations, not a guarantee of wear time for every product or person (L’Oréal Paris).

For a clear liner
Dr. Hauschka’s instructions place its transparent definer outside the soft lip contour. If you combine a transparent definer with a colored liner, that brand says to put the transparent product outside the contour and the colored liner inside it. Check the directions for the specific products you use; this placement is not a universal rule (Dr. Hauschka).

That has not been established. The official brand sources reviewed describe both clear and pigmented liners as helping keep lip colour in place or reduce feathering, but they do not provide a controlled head-to-head test showing that either type works better. Treat prevention and wear statements as product claims rather than a guarantee that a liner will stop feathering in every case.
