You can still use a focused local process to investigate an NVIDIA GPU job failure: preserve the job evidence, inspect system logs for Xid messages, collect GPU state, and choose the next diagnostic according to whether the likely fault is in application code, the driver, or hardware.
What a CrashLens-style investigation can—and cannot—tell you
A GPU job log is a starting point, not a root-cause verdict. NVIDIA describes Xid messages as driver error reports that may reflect a hardware problem, an NVIDIA software issue, or a user-application problem. An Xid can show that a general GPU error occurred, but it does not, on its own, identify which layer caused it. NVIDIA’s Xid guidance explains how to locate and interpret these reports.

The steps below synthesize NVIDIA’s guidance for its GPU and CUDA environment. They are not documented CrashLens features, and they should not be assumed to apply to other GPU vendors or software stacks.
Preserve the evidence before changing the system
Keep the failed run’s original stdout and stderr, the exact command or job configuration, its exit status, and the times at which it started and failed. Record the host and GPU identity along with relevant environment details. This gives whoever investigates the same incident a way to correlate application output with system events. NVIDIA’s GPU node triage guidance identifies the issue description, key log messages, and diagnostic evidence as useful inputs for triage.

Retain original logs rather than relying only on filtered excerpts. When searching for a suspected error, include the surrounding log context and timestamps; a matching line without its neighboring events may not show what happened first.
Find NVIDIA Xid errors in system logs
On Linux, NVIDIA says Xid messages are written to the kernel log buffer and are commonly recorded in the system journal or log files such as /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog. Search the relevant logs for NVRM: Xid, then save the complete message and nearby entries for the incident window. The exact available log destination depends on the system’s logging configuration.

Use the device and error information in the message as evidence to correlate the event with the failed job. Do not treat the Xid number alone as a diagnosis: NVIDIA’s guidance distinguishes possible hardware, driver/software, and application causes, so further investigation depends on the evidence and suspected layer.

| Working hypothesis | Useful next evidence or tool | What it helps investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Application or CUDA code | A relevant debugger or a targeted Compute Sanitizer check | Programming errors; Compute Sanitizer’s tools address different correctness issue classes. |
| Driver | nvidia-bug-report.sh output and a driver bug report to NVIDIA |
System logs and command output that can support driver-level escalation. |
| Hardware | GPU and node diagnostic evidence, followed by the hardware vendor’s support route | A suspected hardware problem requiring vendor investigation. |
This is a working classification, not a guarantee that the causes are mutually exclusive. NVIDIA recommends debugger tools for suspected programming issues, contacting the hardware vendor for suspected hardware problems, and filing a driver bug with NVIDIA with nvidia-bug-report.sh output when a driver problem is suspected. Collect GPU state and node-health diagnostics
nvidia-smi is installed with the NVIDIA driver and provides basic monitoring and configuration information. Collecting nvidia-smi -q can preserve a broader snapshot of GPU state for the incident record. In datacenter environments, consider DCGM diagnostics if DCGM is installed and appropriate for the node; NVIDIA describes DCGM as a datacenter management and monitoring suite with health diagnostics. These tools provide useful context, but a state snapshot is not by itself proof of the failure’s cause. Details are in NVIDIA’s Xid documentation.
Gather a driver report when the driver is suspect
On an NVIDIA Linux system, run nvidia-bug-report.sh when investigating a suspected driver problem, and preserve the compressed report it produces for escalation. NVIDIA’s documentation says to run the script as root; it gathers logs and command output. Include the report with a driver bug submission rather than sending only the application’s error line. Consult the current instructions for working with Xid errors for applicable details.

Use Compute Sanitizer for suspected code correctness issues
Compute Sanitizer is included with the CUDA Toolkit. It offers four checks—memcheck, racecheck, initcheck, and synccheck—for different classes of correctness problems. NVIDIA documents memcheck as detecting certain invalid memory accesses and leaks. Choose a check that matches the observed symptom and the code path you can reproduce; running one check is not a universal diagnosis. Refer to the Compute Sanitizer documentation for tool behavior and usage.

Turn the findings into an escalation
- Application hypothesis: share the reproducible job details and relevant output with the application owner; use an appropriate debugger or targeted Compute Sanitizer check where applicable.
- Driver hypothesis: preserve the Xid and surrounding system logs, collect
nvidia-bug-report.shoutput, and submit the evidence through NVIDIA’s driver bug-report route. - Hardware hypothesis: preserve the node and GPU evidence and contact the hardware vendor, as NVIDIA recommends for suspected hardware problems.
If local evidence does not resolve the failure, send the issue description, key messages, timestamps, and collected diagnostics to the owner responsible for the likely layer. These records make the investigation easier to continue without claiming that any one log or utility can identify every root cause.
