Encode important relationships between data values as checks that run before submission. Make contradictions that downstream systems cannot trust blocking errors, flag suspicious-but-possible values as warnings, and use an independent measurement when internal consistency alone cannot establish correctness.
What an invariant catches
An invariant is a relationship the system assumes must hold among values. If that relationship exists only in a comment or in a teammate’s memory, a later code change can break it without raising an alarm. An executable check turns the assumption into a condition the system can evaluate.

In a journey-distance example described by Siddharth Pandalai, total distance is divided into cleaned, mock, abnormal, and spike figures. The defined relationship is:
cleaned distance = total distance − mock distance − abnormal distance

Spike distance is kept separate rather than subtracted again: it is not another component to remove from the total in this calculation. That distinction matters because a check can only protect the intended model if the relationship itself is defined correctly.
A comment can explain why spike is excluded, but it cannot prevent a future edit from including it in the calculation. The validator should enforce the relationship; the comment can document the reasoning.
Choose a blocking error for contradictions
Use a blocking validation error when a violated rule means the submitted data is impossible under the model or untrustworthy for downstream consumers. In the distance example, checks can reject negative distances, a mismatch between the component values and the total, or a cleaned distance greater than the total.

These are not merely unusual observations: they contradict the defined constraints. Blocking submission prevents dependent systems from treating them as valid inputs. Make the failure actionable by identifying the affected field and the rule that failed, rather than returning only a generic invalid-data message.
Use warnings for suspicious, not impossible, values
Some values satisfy the arithmetic and still look wrong. Pandalai’s example uses unusual ratios among distance components as a warning signal. A high ratio may indicate unusual input, but it may also reveal that a threshold or classification heuristic needs revision.
A warning should therefore invite review or monitoring without automatically rejecting data that could be legitimate. It is not simply a weaker error: it communicates uncertainty. If every unusual ratio blocks submission, a heuristic can become an accidental hard rule; if contradictions are only warnings, bad data can continue downstream.

Handle floating-point values with an explicit tolerance
Exact equality can be brittle when distances are accumulated using floating-point arithmetic. A computed sum may differ slightly from the expected value because of representation and rounding, even when the underlying values are effectively consistent.
Instead of comparing the two sides for exact equality, define an acceptable difference and validate that the absolute mismatch stays within it. Pandalai uses 0.1 metre in this particular distance example; that figure is an implementation choice for the example, not a general tolerance recommendation. Choose a tolerance based on the units, measurement process, and consequences of accepting a mismatch, and make it visible in the rule.

Internal checks can establish that related values agree with one another; they cannot prove that the values represent reality. If total, cleaned, mock, and abnormal distances all derive from the same faulty GPS processing, their arithmetic may still be perfectly consistent.

Compare against an independent source when the decision requires stronger assurance. For example, comparing GPS-derived distance with an odometer measurement can expose an error that checks among GPS-derived values will miss. The independent measurement has its own limitations, but it tests a different failure path.
Put the rules where they run before submission
Keep the validation logic close to the boundary where data is accepted or submitted, and make it straightforward to exercise in tests. The practical goal is for violations to be detected before downstream consumers receive the data—not for a rule to exist only in documentation or in a test that is never run.

The distance example demonstrates a design approach, not a measured industry-wide reliability benefit. Its thresholds and tolerance are specific to the example; they should not be copied as universal defaults.
