Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Update rings manage broad Windows Update behavior—including deferrals, deadlines, restart experience, and staged rollouts. Quality update policies add deployment orchestration for scenarios such as Autopatch-managed quality updates and eligible hotpatching. They are optional for ordinary monthly updates, and they do not replace rings. For one urgent, supported update, use an expedite policy rather than treating it as your regular monthly servicing method.
How the three Intune policy types differ
| Policy | Main purpose | Best fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update ring | Set broad Windows Update client behavior and support rollout stages such as test, pilot, and production. | Organizations that need to control deferrals and the user experience around installing updates and restarting. | Ring settings remain relevant alongside quality update policies. |
| Quality update policy | Orchestrate quality-update deployment scenarios, including Autopatch-managed deployments, eligible hotpatch, and policy-based reporting. | Organizations using those advanced deployment or reporting capabilities. | It is not required just to receive routine monthly quality updates, and it does not take over ring controls for deadlines, notifications, deferrals, and restart behavior. |
| Expedite policy | Accelerate deployment of one selected eligible quality update. | A specific urgent update that should arrive sooner than the normal cadence. | It can override an applicable deferral for the selected update, but is not intended as the routine monthly servicing mechanism. |
Microsoft describes update rings as working with other Windows Update policies rather than replacing them. See Microsoft’s update ring management guidance and the overview of Windows quality update policies.

Do you need a quality update policy if you already use update rings?
Not for ordinary monthly quality updates alone. Microsoft says devices without a quality update policy continue receiving quality updates through standard Windows Update behavior. Rings and Windows Update client policies can govern deferrals, deadlines, restarts, and notifications in that setup.
Add a quality update policy when its orchestration features match your deployment model—for example, Autopatch-managed quality deployments, eligible hotpatch, or policy-based quality-update reporting. Check current licensing and device eligibility against Microsoft’s guidance before choosing that model.

What an update ring controls
Rings are the broad client-behavior layer. Assigning different rings to device groups lets administrators stage rollout behavior, while ring settings shape when updates are offered and how installation and restart are presented to users. Microsoft’s documented setting ranges include 0–30 days for quality update deferral and 0–365 days for feature update deferral; these are configuration ranges, not recommended values for every organization. The Intune update ring settings reference also covers automatic update behavior and restart controls such as active hours.
Active hours are not a guarantee against work-hour restarts
Active hours are intended to suppress update restarts during a configured period, but compliance deadlines can override that protection. Microsoft calculates a deadline from when a device initially discovers an update in a scan. If installation finishes and a restart is pending, the grace period begins then; the effective deadline is the later of the scan-discovery deadline or the pending-restart time plus the grace period. Windows can restart outside active hours before that point, and once the effective deadline arrives, it can force a restart regardless of active hours. See Microsoft’s compliance deadline guidance.

When to use an expedite policy
Use expedite when a particular eligible quality update needs to be deployed faster than normal servicing allows—for example, when an urgent issue makes waiting for the usual cadence unsuitable. Select the specific update; applicability is evaluated against the device’s Windows version and architecture. An expedite policy can override an applicable deferral for that selected update, but it is not a substitute for a regular monthly deployment plan.

Assignment does not promise immediate installation. Start timing can vary with device connectivity, scan timing, communication with the service, and cloud processing. Microsoft also documents environment prerequisites and limitations, including supported Windows editions and versions, enrollment and join requirements, Windows Update connectivity, and no support in GCC or GCC High/DoD environments. Verify the current prerequisites for the target tenant and devices before deployment.

Choose the policy by the problem you need to solve
- Need staged rollout behavior, deferrals, or control over restart experience? Configure update rings and validate assignments alongside other Windows Update policies.
- Need Autopatch orchestration, eligible hotpatch, or quality-update policy reporting? Evaluate a quality update policy, after confirming licensing, eligibility, and deployment-model requirements.
- Need one supported update faster than the normal cadence? Use an expedite policy for that update, while keeping the ordinary monthly servicing approach in place.
