It saves observations so you can compare rankings, competitors, countries and changes over time. AppTrail supplies the dashboard and history; searches run through a SerpApi account and can use its credits.
What AppTrail tracks
You choose the apps, keywords, countries, language, AI questions and checking frequency. AppTrail then records results for later review. Its documented workflows cover three related but distinct kinds of monitoring:

App-store keyword rankings
Track an app’s position for a keyword in Apple App Store and Google Play results, and review how its positions are distributed over time. AppTrail can also record when an app is not found. A phrase such as daily routine or habit tracker can be used to monitor how a relevant app appears in store search.
AI mentions and citations
AppTrail can check Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Bing Copilot in response to questions such as “Which apps help build daily habits?” It records whether an app is mentioned and whether the answer links to the app’s website or store listing. A mention and a citation are different signals: an answer can mention an app without linking to it.

Listing changes
When listing-history collection is enabled, AppTrail can save changes to fields such as titles, descriptions, versions, pricing, icons and screenshots. Collection starts when you enable it; enabling the feature does not recreate older listing states.
Comparing apps and markets
AppTrail supports comparisons among selected apps for the same keyword, store and country. For AI questions, it can compare app mentions and citations. You can also compare results across countries; the project describes a query matrix with timestamps and links to saved evidence. These features let you inspect how the selected apps and markets differ in the observations AppTrail collects, rather than treating one search result as a permanent ranking.

How checks, schedules and alerts work
You can run checks manually or schedule them daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly. The launch announcement describes ranking-loss alerts for an app that ranked in the top 10: an alert is based on two successful checks confirming a qualifying loss. The schedule determines when new observations are requested; it does not turn missed periods into historical data.
What you need to run AppTrail
The PyPI project documentation lists Python 3.11 or newer. AppTrail can be launched with uvx apptrail, installed with pip and run as apptrail, or run with Docker. Initial setup uses a one-time code printed in the terminal or container logs to create the owner account. You then connect and verify your SerpApi key.

The service must stay running for scheduled collection
For scheduled checks to happen, the AppTrail process or container must remain running. You can close the browser while collection continues, but closing the browser is not the same as stopping the service. AppTrail stores account and tracking history in its data directory or configured Docker volume. If the service is stopped, saved history remains; missed observations cannot be reconstructed, and overdue checks resume after the service starts again.
SerpApi account and credit use
AppTrail uses the SerpApi account and API key you provide for search requests. Discovery, listing verification, tracking, listing-history collection, manual checks and retries may consume credits. AppTrail provides usage estimates, which are the practical place to assess the effect of your configuration before running checks.

The same announcement said SerpApi included 250 free search credits per month. These are dated statements, not a guaranteed consumption rate or a promise of current free-credit terms; check your SerpApi account’s current terms and AppTrail’s estimate.

AppTrail can export search history as CSV and download a workspace backup. The PyPI documentation says backups omit some bulky or raw material, including archived images and raw SerpApi responses, while retaining saved results and other evidence. A downloaded backup therefore is not a complete archive of every underlying response or image.

How to assess whether AppTrail fits
AppTrail is suited to users who want a self-hosted record of selected app-store rankings, listing changes and visibility in the named AI experiences. It is not a hosted monitoring service that removes operational responsibility: you provide the search account, keep the process running for scheduled collection, and maintain the data directory or Docker volume where history is stored.

The project’s 1.0.0 release metadata was published on PyPI on October 1, 2026, and the package metadata states an MIT license expression. The feature descriptions above come from SerpApi’s announcement and the project’s maintainer-supplied documentation. They establish documented functionality, not independent performance testing or a head-to-head comparison with other tools.
