Microplastics are not chemically inert where they meet water. A Nature study published 14 October 2026 reports that ordinary particles of polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate and polymethyl methacrylate can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) spontaneously at their surfaces.
The activity appears to arise from a coupled interfacial process: water molecules reorganize against hydrophobic polymer surfaces, while the interface develops a negative electrostatic field. Together, partial solvation and interfacial charge make hydroxide oxidation and radical formation energetically easier. The findings describe a laboratory mechanism, not proof that environmental microplastics cause population-level human disease.

What the study actually measured
Qian, Zhao, Chan and colleagues examined commodity microplastic particles with fluorescence assays, electrophoretic measurements and molecular or ab initio calculations. The experiments found ROS signals for all six tested polymers. Activity varied with the chemistry of the water-facing interface rather than simply with the bulk polymer, which can appear inert in ordinary handling.

As a result, smaller pieces provide more interface at which water can reorganize, charge can accumulate and reactions can occur. How hydrophobic surfaces make radicals
- Interfacial water loses some bulk-like order. Hydrophobic polymer surfaces leave more undercoordinated, or “dangling,” hydroxyl groups in the adjacent water layer. These molecules have reduced tetrahedral organization compared with bulk water.
- Hydroxide oxidation becomes more favorable. Partial solvation at the surface, combined with the local electric field, lowers the calculated energetic cost of oxidizing hydroxide and forming radical species.
- ROS forms without an added catalyst. The measured signal is therefore described as intrinsic interfacial chemistry, although its magnitude depends on polymer, surface state and water conditions.
Pristine polystyrene showed strongly negative zeta potentials both in pure water and in 1 mM sodium chloride. A positively charged fluorescent dye, Rhodamine 800, accumulated at the particle surface, supporting the presence of an electrical double layer. Calculations estimated an average surface charge density of approximately one negative OH− charge per 3 nm2.
What happens when the interface is neutralized
The researchers added 0.1% Triton X-100, a surfactant that changes how water contacts the polymer. Under that condition, polystyrene’s zeta potential moved close to zero, below −5 mV; Rhodamine 800 partitioning was suppressed, and ROS generation fell markedly.

Across four Triton X-100 conditions, physical activity and chemical activity were inversely related, with a Pearson correlation of r = −0.99. This does not mean every surfactant or natural coating will produce the same result, but it links electrostatic and chemical measurements within the tested system.

All six polymers generated spontaneous radical signals, but the study found stronger activity for the more hydrophobic polyolefins. Simulations connected the fraction of dangling OH groups with fluorescence from an aminophenyl fluorescein (APF) assay: across the six polymer–water systems, the correlation was r = 0.94.

Why surface charge matters for proteins and DNA
Charged biomolecules—including wheat-germ agglutinin (WGA), R-phycoerythrin (R-PE) and DNA oligomers—partitioned to microplastic surfaces. Positively charged WGA accumulated more strongly than negatively charged R-PE, consistent with electrostatic attraction to a negatively charged interface. More hydrophobic PP concentrated biomolecules more strongly than PMMA, while Triton X-100 reduced enrichment.

At polystyrene surfaces, the experiments also reported protein aggregation. Such interactions could alter a particle’s biological identity and may contribute to cellular stress; however, these are mechanistic and experimental implications. The findings do not establish a dose, exposure level or causal pathway for harm in human populations.

The Nature study adds a different observation: the water-facing interface itself can generate ROS. Adsorption and ROS production may influence one another in a real environment, but they are distinct mechanisms and should not be treated as interchangeable evidence of toxicity.
What environmental conditions could change the result?
Surface charge, aggregation, transport and adsorption are sensitive to pH, salinity, temperature, dissolved organic matter and particle properties. Changing ionic strength can compress an electrical double layer; natural organic matter can coat or block reactive sites; and aging can alter roughness, oxidation and functional groups. The reported laboratory values should therefore not be transferred directly to every river, ocean, wastewater stream or drinking-water system.
Evidence limits and open questions
The evidence currently consists mainly of controlled laboratory experiments, fluorescence and electrophoresis measurements, and molecular or ab initio calculations. The supplied study does not establish independent replication across field-aged particles or natural waters. Important next tests include measuring ROS from particles with realistic weathering histories, natural organic coatings and mixed contaminants, then determining whether concentrations and lifetimes are sufficient to affect cells under environmentally relevant exposure conditions.
“Here we show that commodity microplastics exhibit intrinsic physicochemical activity in water, manifested by the spontaneous generation of reactive oxygen species that increases with interfacial hydrophobicity and strongly correlates with interfacial electrostatics.” — Naixin Qian, Ruoqi Zhao, Kwing Yeung Chan and colleagues, Nature, 2026.
