For a 4K live broadcast on YouTube, the recommended encoder bitrate is 30–50 Mbps, depending on frame rate and codec. That is the stream’s outgoing bitrate—not a guarantee that an internet plan advertised at the same upload speed will keep it stable. For watching 4K, the requirement is different: Netflix recommends a stable connection of 15 Mbps or higher for its 4K/UHD playback. First identify whether you are sending or watching the stream; upload and download speeds answer different questions.
4K streaming speed depends on what you are doing
- Broadcasting: Your connection must reliably upload the encoder’s outgoing stream. The platform’s recommended bitrate is a useful baseline, but the measured upload capacity at your actual location matters more than the speed advertised for your plan.
- Watching: Your connection must download enough data for playback. A service’s recommendation applies to that service and viewing scenario, not automatically to every platform.
Do not compare a creator’s upload bitrate with a viewer’s download recommendation as though they were the same measurement. They describe traffic in opposite directions and different tasks.
YouTube Live: recommended 4K encoder bitrates
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these recommended bitrates for 4K/2160p. The figures describe the configured stream bitrate; they are not broadband-plan speed recommendations. YouTube does not state a universal extra-capacity percentage in the cited guidance.
| Resolution and frame rate | Codec | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 4K/2160p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 30 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p at 30 fps | H.264 | 42 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 35 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p at 60 fps | H.264 | 50 Mbps |
These recommendations come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The help page does not display a publication year for these figures.

How much upload speed should a 4K broadcaster have?
Use the matching bitrate above to check whether your connection can support the stream, but do not treat that number as a sufficient whole-plan speed by itself. Actual upload performance can vary with Wi-Fi quality, congestion, your provider’s conditions, and other devices using the connection. The sources do not establish a universal headroom percentage, so avoid relying on a fixed multiplier as a guarantee.
For example, a 4K/2160p 60 fps H.264 broadcast has a YouTube-recommended encoder bitrate of 50 Mbps. A speed test that briefly reports 50 Mbps upload does not establish that the connection can sustain that rate throughout a live event, particularly when other network use or fluctuations are present.

How to check a broadcast connection before going live
- Choose the intended output settings. Identify whether the stream is 4K/2160p at 30 or 60 fps and which codec you will use. Use the corresponding YouTube recommendation in the table.
- Test upload performance at the broadcasting location. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Test on the network and connection arrangement you plan to use for the event; an advertised plan speed alone does not show actual performance at that setup.
- Rehearse with representative content. YouTube advises testing before starting the live stream. Include the movement and audio you expect during the event, rather than testing only a static screen.
- Watch stream health during the broadcast. Continue monitoring the live stream while it is running. A pre-event result cannot rule out later changes in network conditions.
YouTube’s recommendations and testing advice are on its encoder settings help page.
Watching a 4K live event
For Netflix 4K/UHD playback, Netflix recommends a stable internet connection of 15 Mbps or higher. This is Netflix’s recommendation, not a universal minimum for every live-streaming service. Netflix notes that many factors can affect streaming video quality; other devices or simultaneous streams in the household can also add demand to the connection.

Platform support is not the same everywhere
YouTube publishes guidance for 4K live encoder settings. A surfaced official Twitch Help result for “2K Streaming on Twitch” says Twitch does not offer 4K or AV1 streaming at the time of that result, but the page could not be opened for confirmation. Because platform features can change, check Twitch’s current support before planning a 4K broadcast: Twitch Help: 2K Streaming on Twitch.
