An internet deletion service is a paid or free tool that looks for your personal profiles on data broker and people-search sites, then sends opt-out, deletion, suppression or removal requests on your behalf. It doesn’t erase you from the internet. It works only on the sites it covers and through the request processes those sites offer.
What the term really means
“Internet deletion service” is a reader-friendly label. The more precise names are personal information removal service and PII removal service (PII means personally identifiable information). The 2025 academic paper “Measuring the Accuracy and Effectiveness of PII Removal Services” uses that language and names Incogni and DeleteMe among the examples. Optery is another provider in the category.

The word “deletion” oversells the product. What the service targets is a defined set of data brokers, not the web as a whole. Search engine results, social media posts, news articles, forum comments and your own accounts are generally outside that scope.

Why these services exist
Data brokers assemble records from several kinds of source: web crawls, public records, online activity, self-reported information and other brokers. The resulting profiles can include:

Each broker has its own opt-out procedure. Some use forms that are hard to find. Others require an email request. Repeating this by hand across many brokers is tedious, and that tedium is what the services sell relief from.
How a removal service works
- You supply identifying details. These typically include your name and other information the provider needs to tell your records apart from someone else’s.
- The service searches its coverage list. It looks only at the brokers it has chosen to support.
- It submits requests. For matching profiles it asks the broker to remove or suppress the record, or to stop certain processing.
- Some providers monitor and resubmit. Rescanning and repeat requests are provider-specific features. Check the current terms before assuming they’re included.
What these services cannot do
They are not a universal “delete me” button. Each provider has its own list of covered brokers, and outcomes vary. The study found that some brokers may ignore requests.

Optery’s Terms of Service say this plainly: “It is not possible for Optery, Inc. to remove 100% of your personal information from the Internet, or even from all of the data brokers and information aggregators in each Removal List.” That is one provider’s disclaimer, not a neutral industry statement. Still, it describes a limit the whole category shares.
A submitted request is also not the same as a confirmed deletion. Treat “request sent” and “record gone” as separate claims.

The privacy trade-off
To find your records, the provider has to know who you are. Optery’s privacy policy says it sends certain personal data to brokers and information aggregators in order to locate records and submit requests. It also says it can’t guarantee how those third parties handle the information. Using any such service therefore means handing over the kind of details you’re trying to remove. Read what the provider collects, who receives it, how long it keeps it, and whether you can have it deleted.
Legal authorization
Some requests depend on privacy law where you live. Optery says it submits requests as an authorized agent where state law permits. It also notes that some brokers require a limited power of attorney or other written authorization. This is one provider’s example, not a universal rule. What you can demand, and what a broker may ask of you, depends on your jurisdiction.

How to compare services

A caution on coverage numbers: the study’s authors collected provider coverage lists weekly from March 11 to November 18, 2024, and counted 1,759 unique data broker entities across the combined lists for 10 services. That figure is historical. It isn’t the current coverage of any one service, and it isn’t the total number of data brokers in existence.

A manual opt-out workflow is the alternative. You find each broker, follow its process and repeat as records return. It costs no subscription fee, but it takes time. It also means you give your details only to the brokers themselves, not to an additional provider.

The Bottom Line
Judge an “internet deletion service” by its disclosed coverage, repeat-request practice, evidence of results, jurisdiction support and data handling. Don’t judge it by an unqualified promise to remove you from the internet.
