For PS3 emulation, the exact Blu-ray drive model and revision matter more than whether it is internal or external. RPCS3 documents compatible examples in both categories, but most Blu-ray drives cannot necessarily read PS3 discs. An internal drive fits a desktop with a suitable bay; an external USB drive is easier to connect to a laptop, mini PC, or bay-less desktop. Neither form factor guarantees compatibility.
Will an external Blu-ray drive read PS3 discs?
Only if that specific drive is supported for the intended task. RPCS3’s Quickstart guide lists selected internal and external drives and describes a PC disc-reading method that requires a compatible Mediatek chipset and a +6 read offset. A USB connection by itself does not make a drive compatible.

The available sources do not establish that either form factor is inherently faster, cheaper, quieter, or more durable. Choose based on where you will use it and whether the exact drive is supported.
Dumping a disc and playing directly from it are different workflows
Dumping a game to files
RPCS3’s guide describes using a compatible Blu-ray drive to dump a disc on a computer; it also notes that an .ird file must be available for that PC method. The PS3 Disc Dumper documentation likewise requires a compatible drive and says ISO dumping is unsupported. If a disc is inserted but no files appear in the tool, its documentation says the drive is not compatible.

Using a PS3 console instead
RPCS3 recommends dumping your own titles from a PS3 as the most compatible migration method. Its guide describes using multiMAN, then transferring the resulting files to the computer by external drive or FTP. The guide also describes a separate system-backup and extraction workflow for digital content. Follow the current project instructions for the supported steps and use Sony’s PS3 system software support page for official system software.

A September 2026 Tom’s Hardware report says RPCS3 added direct play from certain internal and external drives. This is a newer, distinct feature—not a reason to assume that every drive capable of dumping can also launch games from disc. Support may depend on the emulator build, operating system, and exact drive. Check current RPCS3 project documentation or build notes before relying on direct-disc play.

How to choose and check a drive before buying
- Decide where it will connect. Choose an internal drive only if your desktop has a suitable optical bay and connection. Choose an external drive if you need USB attachment or portability, and check its specific USB and power requirements.
- Match the complete model and revision. Compare the product label and seller photos with RPCS3’s current compatibility list. Do not infer support from a similar model number, a generic listing title, or the enclosure alone.
- Check the seller’s return terms. Prefer a seller offering buyer protection and returns, particularly for used or unusually described drives.
- Do not assume an enclosure fixes compatibility. A USB enclosure or adapter does not turn an unsupported mechanism into a compatible drive; the sources do not establish any particular enclosure as a guaranteed fit.
- Confirm the workflow you need. If your goal is dumping, consult RPCS3’s current dumping instructions and the Disc Dumper documentation. If you want direct-disc play, verify current build and platform support separately.
Watch for misleading listings and counterfeit drives
On 1 October 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that RPCS3 developers had warned of fake Blu-ray drives built with older mechanisms inside higher-end shells, sometimes with spoofed firmware. The report cites possible warning signs including misspellings, misaligned logos, incorrect dates, and obscured PCB markings. This is a reported risk, not evidence that every marketplace listing is suspect; buying from a seller with clear photos, returns, and buyer protection reduces the chance of being stuck with the wrong hardware.

A supported drive answers whether the disc can be read or dumped; it does not establish that a particular game runs well in RPCS3. Check the emulator’s per-game compatibility list as a separate step. Game compatibility and performance are software questions, not properties of the optical drive.
