For a standard Windows 11 installation, use an external USB flash drive to start Windows Setup, then install Windows onto a compatible internal SSD. The USB installer and the drive that holds Windows have different jobs. Installing a portable Windows workspace on an external drive is a separate, legacy scenario—not the standard Windows 11 setup described here.
Which drive should hold Windows?
Choose the compatible internal SSD as the installation destination in Windows Setup. Use the external USB flash drive to create bootable installation media, start the PC, and launch Setup. Microsoft’s Windows 11 download instructions and Media Creation Tool guidance describe the USB as installation media; Setup then lets you select where to install Windows.

| Drive | Role in a standard Windows 11 clean install | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Internal SSD | Select it as the Windows installation location. | Confirm it fits the PC and is supported by its manufacturer; form factor, interface, and capacity limits vary by model. |
| External USB flash drive | Create and boot from Windows installation media. | Microsoft specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB. Creating the media erases its contents. |
The 8 GB requirement is for the installer USB, not a recommended size for the installed operating system. Microsoft lists 64 GB or greater available storage as the Windows 11 minimum, but that is a system requirement—not a buying recommendation for an SSD. Check both the PC’s supported drive specifications and your own storage needs.
Can Windows 11 be installed on an external drive?
It depends on what “install” means. An external USB drive is the normal way to carry Windows Setup to a PC; that does not make it the normal destination for a Windows 11 installation. Microsoft’s standard instructions describe booting from installation media and selecting an installation location, while the supplied Windows To Go documentation covers a distinct Windows 10 Enterprise and Education feature.

Microsoft’s Windows To Go FAQ describes a portable Windows workspace using certified USB 3.0 drives, and recommends at least 20 GB for that legacy scenario. It does not establish an ordinary Windows 11 installation-to-USB workflow. If your goal is a portable Windows environment, do not treat the Windows 11 installer USB—or the legacy Windows To Go guidance—as proof that a standard external-drive installation is supported.
Check Windows 11 and SSD compatibility first
Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements include 64 GB or greater available storage, at least 4 GB of memory, a compatible 64-bit processor, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0, according to Microsoft’s requirements documentation. These minimums do not identify which SSD will fit a particular PC. Look up the computer’s model-specific service or specification information before buying or replacing a drive.

Microsoft warns that installing Windows 11 on hardware that does not meet its requirements can cause compatibility problems, may leave the device unsupported, and does not guarantee updates. See its guidance on unsupported devices.

- Back up files. A clean install removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Microsoft recommends backing up before reinstalling; its reinstall instructions explain the consequences.
- Create the installer. Use Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool with a blank USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. The creation process deletes the USB drive’s contents, so save anything important elsewhere first.
- Start the target PC from USB. Connect the installer and use the PC’s boot menu or its BIOS/UEFI boot-order settings to start from it. The exact key and menu vary by manufacturer; consult the PC maker’s instructions if needed.
- Select the internal SSD in Windows Setup. At the installation-location step, identify the intended internal drive before proceeding. If more than one drive is listed, use the displayed drive information and the PC’s documentation to confirm which is which.
- Be deliberate with partitions. Deleting or formatting partitions can destroy data. Do not change partitions until you have verified the target drive and understand that its existing contents may be erased.
- Restore the usual boot order if you changed it. Otherwise, the PC may start the installer again rather than booting from the newly installed Windows system.
Common mix-up: installer capacity versus Windows storage
The numbers refer to different things. The at-least-8-GB figure applies to the USB flash drive used to create installation media. The 64-GB-or-greater figure is Microsoft’s minimum available storage requirement for Windows 11. Neither tells you the right SSD capacity for your needs, and neither confirms that a particular SSD is compatible with your PC.
