Internal Hard Drive: Definition, Types, and How It Differs from HDD and SSD

An internal hard drive is storage installed inside a computer. Here is what the term means, how HDDs and SSDs differ, and what to check before replacing one.

An internal hard drive is a storage device installed inside a computer or similar system to hold its operating system, applications, and files. Western Digital puts it this way: “An internal hard drive is installed inside a desktop, laptop, server, or NAS system to store your operating system, applications, and files.” (Western Digital)

“Internal” describes location, not technology

The word “internal” says where the drive sits: inside the device’s enclosure, as opposed to an external drive that connects from outside. It says nothing about how the drive stores data. An internal drive can be a mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) or a solid-state drive (SSD). Dell’s support documentation covers both types and the internal/external distinction.

HDD vs. SSD: what “hard drive” can mean

HDD

A hard disk drive stores data on magnetic platters and uses mechanical read/write components to access it (Dell).

SSD

A solid-state drive stores data in non-volatile solid-state memory instead of spinning platters. The Storage Networking Industry Association offers an educational overview.

Why the term is blurry

In everyday use, and even in some technical documents, “hard drive” is a catch-all. Microsoft’s Windows deployment documentation, for example, describes an SSD as a hard drive that uses solid-state memory. To avoid confusion, this article uses “HDD” for the mechanical magnetic device and “SSD” for flash-based storage.

Shapes and connections vary

Internal drives come in different physical formats. Microsoft’s storage form factor enumeration (last updated 2024-02-22) lists nominal 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch devices and M.2 modules, among others. These are labels for shape, not a promise that a drive fits a given computer.

  • Form factor: the physical size and mounting style, such as 3.5-inch, 2.5-inch, or M.2.
  • Interface and protocol: how the drive talks to the system. M.2 is a form factor only, so the supported interface or protocol also matters (SNIA).
  • Drive technology: HDD or SSD.
  • Capacity: worth choosing only after you know which drives your system accepts.

Before replacing or upgrading one

  1. Find your computer’s model number and its documentation or specifications.
  2. Check which drive types, interfaces, form factors, and sizes it supports.
  3. Only then compare capacity and workload needs.

Not every computer has a user-replaceable drive, and no form factor or interface is universally compatible. Device-specific documentation should decide the purchase.
