Choose an output frame rate based on the source and destination: producing one progressive frame per field can preserve more motion detail, while producing one frame per two fields uses a lower frame rate. First verify the source’s scan type, resolution, frame rate, and field order, then confirm which part of your capture and streaming chain handles conversion.
What interlaced video means for a live stream
Interlaced video represents a picture as two fields, each containing alternating lines. Those fields can capture different moments in time. If they are simply combined into a progressive frame, movement between the fields can appear as comb-like edges or other motion artifacts. Deinterlacing converts the input to progressive frames; depending on the method and target cadence, it can produce one frame per pair of fields or one frame per field.
That distinction matters when comparing labels such as 1080p30 and 1080i50. An “i” source is interlaced, not a progressive stream at the same nominal frame rate. Frame-rate labels and conventions differ across video standards, so identify the actual source mode rather than assuming that “30i” means 30 progressive frames per second.
Identify the source before changing settings
Check the output mode of the camera, broadcast feed, or other source; do not infer it from a menu label or the appearance of the recording alone. Establish its resolution, rate, field order (which field comes first), and whether it is live video or film-derived material that may need inverse telecine rather than ordinary deinterlacing. AWS Elemental Live’s guide treats deinterlacing, inverse telecine, and adaptive processing as distinct operations, with different conversion paths depending on source type: AWS Elemental Live User Guide.

- Connect Classic RCA Devices to HDMI Displays: Bring older AV equipment back into use by converting yellow, white and red composite RCA signals into HDMI output for newer TVs, monitors and projectors. Choose between 720P and 1080P output at 60Hz to match your display. Please note that this av to hdmi adapter is built specifically for connecting an RCA/AV source to an HDMI display; it cannot convert an HDMI source to RCA/AV.
- Complete 3-Cable Set Included: Includes separate RCA, HDMI and Micro USB cables for video/audio connection, HDMI output and power. The RCA and HDMI cables are detachable for flexible placement and use with compatible equipment. USB power is required for operation. A Micro USB cable is included; a 5V/1A power adapter is not included.
- Selectable 720P and 1080P Output: Use the built-in resolution switch to select 720P or 1080P output at 60Hz based on your TV or monitor. No software or drivers are required. Connect the RCA source, HDMI display and USB power, then select the desired output resolution.
- Compatibility with Legacy AV Devices: Compatible with RCA-output VCRs, VHS players, DVD players, set-top boxes and karaoke systems, as well as compatible PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Wii, N64, SNES and GameCube systems using RCA/AV output. Supports PAL, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N analog input formats.
- HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.
- Confirm the exact input mode supported by the camera and capture device.
- Find out whether the capture device passes interlaced fields through, deinterlaces them, or offers a choice.
- Check field order and ensure it is interpreted consistently throughout the chain.
- Determine whether the destination requires progressive video and which progressive frame rates it accepts.
Do not assume a capture card accepts every interlaced resolution and rate, or that it automatically deinterlaces. Verify the device’s documented input modes and processing behavior for the specific signal. The available GStreamer documentation also illustrates the reverse operation—creating interlaced streams from progressive input—so an interlaced-looking output or setting should not be taken as proof of how the original source was captured: GStreamer interlace element documentation.
Choose the deinterlaced output cadence
| Approach | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One output frame per two fields | Combines information from a pair of fields into one progressive frame; AWS gives 1080i30 to 1080p30 as an example. | Produces fewer frames per second, but can show less temporal motion detail. |
| One output frame per field | Creates a progressive frame for each field; AWS gives 29.97 to 59.94 and 25 to 50 as examples. | Can preserve more motion cadence, but doubles the output frame rate relative to one frame per field pair and asks the processing and encoding pipeline to handle more frames. |
These examples are format conversions, not interchangeable ways to label every input. AMD’s Video Processing Subsystem Product Guide PG231, version 2.3 released 2026-08-13, illustrates 1080i60 to 1080p60 and explains that simply combining interlaced streams can produce motion artifacts. Its deinterlacing section describes spatial and temporal processing approaches: AMD Video Processing Subsystem Product Guide PG231: Deinterlacing.

Field-rate output is often preferable when preserving live motion is important and the destination accepts the resulting rate. A lower-rate output may be appropriate when the delivery format or available processing capacity calls for it. Check the actual source convention and destination requirements before choosing; do not convert based on a bare “30i” or “60i” label.
Decide where deinterlacing happens
Conversion may happen in the capture hardware, streaming application, or live encoder. The important practical check is that it happens early enough for preview, compositing, and encoding to receive clean progressive frames when the delivery path requires progressive output. Avoid accidentally deinterlacing twice or leaving the encoder to interpret fields with the wrong order.

- Inspect the source and capture device. Verify the exact input mode and whether the device can perform deinterlacing. If it does, confirm its output is progressive at the intended cadence.
- Check the streaming application’s video pipeline. Set the output to a supported progressive resolution and frame rate. If the application provides a deinterlacing control for the capture source, choose a method appropriate to the source and preview moving detail for combing or judder.
- Check the live encoder. If conversion is configured there, confirm the input scan type, field order, deinterlace mode, and progressive output rate. AWS Elemental Live documents deinterlacing configuration in its encoder pipeline: AWS Elemental Live User Guide.
- Inspect motion, not only a paused frame. Watch a moving subject, a horizontal edge, or a pan. Combing suggests fields are being combined without suitable deinterlacing; judder or unnatural motion can indicate an unsuitable cadence or field-order handling.
- Confirm the final ingest format separately. Deinterlacing does not select a codec, container, or guarantee platform compatibility. Use the destination’s current ingest specifications.
For Apple-device HLS authoring, Apple says interlaced source content must be deinterlaced and recommends converting 30i content to 60p rather than 30p. Its guidance recommends 60 or 59.94 fps for live NTSC/ATSC sources and 50 fps for live PAL sources. These are Apple’s HLS authoring recommendations, not universal requirements for every streaming platform: HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) authoring specification for Apple devices. For other destinations, check their current accepted formats.
Set output and encoding without confusing the jobs
Choose deinterlacing and output cadence first, then configure the encoder for the progressive output and the destination. Deinterlacing cannot repair an incorrect field order after the fact, and changing codec or container does not remove interlace artifacts. OBS identifies H.264 as its default codec for web video; its guide also discusses recording formats and their trade-offs, which should not be mistaken for a universal live-stream requirement: OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

There is no single bitrate or codec setting that follows from “interlaced” alone. Required bitrate depends on the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, visual complexity, and destination ingest rules. Use the destination’s current recommendations for the progressive output you selected, and verify that the encoder and hardware can sustain the increased frame-processing load if using one frame per field.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Comb-like edges on moving subjects | Interlaced fields are being combined as though they were one progressive frame, or deinterlacing is missing. | Confirm the source is interlaced and enable deinterlacing at one point in the chain; verify field order. |
| Motion looks jerky after conversion | The output cadence may discard temporal information, or the source rate and output rate may not match the intended conversion. | Compare one-frame-per-pair output with one-frame-per-field output where supported, then verify destination compatibility and system capacity. |
| Capture device shows no picture or rejects the mode | The selected resolution, frame rate, or scan type may not be supported by that device. | Check the device’s exact supported inputs and select a compatible source mode; do not assume it deinterlaces automatically. |
| Preview looks clean but stream has artifacts, or vice versa | Different stages may be processing the signal, or deinterlacing may be applied at the wrong point or more than once. | Trace the path from source through capture, application, and encoder; inspect the output of each stage and confirm where conversion occurs. |
| Progressive output is rejected by a platform | The codec, frame rate, resolution, or other ingest setting may not meet that destination’s requirements. | Check the platform’s current ingest documentation separately from the deinterlacing settings. |
