Interference, Pre-Emphasis, and the Capture Effect in FM and PM Systems

In FM and PM systems, an interfering signal does not produce one fixed outcome: reception depends on the relative signal levels and on how the receiver filters, limits, and demodulates them. In VHF FM sound broadcasting, pre-emphasis and matching receiver de-emphasis address the frequency-dependent noise heard after detection; they are not a cure for co-channel interference.

What the capture effect means

Frequency modulation (FM) and phase modulation (PM) both encode information in a carrier’s angle rather than in its amplitude. When a wanted signal and an interferer reach a receiver together, their radio-frequency waveforms combine before detection. The receiver’s response to that combination—not a universal property of FM or PM alone—determines whether one signal dominates, both cause distortion, or reception becomes unstable.

The term capture effect describes a receiver tending to produce the wanted modulation from one of two competing signals, often the stronger one. It does not guarantee that the stronger signal will always win cleanly, nor does it establish a single signal-level difference at which capture occurs in every receiver.

Why interfering signals can distort reception

A 1978 CCIR technical discussion describes vector combination for certain cases, including continuous-wave, narrow-band FM, and narrow-band AM interference. In those cases, when the undesired signal’s vector approaches the wanted signal in magnitude, the wanted modulation can be strongly distorted; a stronger interferer can capture the receiver. This account explains particular interference classes, not every FM or PM link or receiver.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When competing signals are equal or close in level, do not expect a neat handoff from one to the other. The result may instead be substantially impaired or distorted reception. The transition depends on the signal and receiver conditions, so a general-purpose capture threshold cannot be inferred from the mechanism alone.

Why the receiver changes the result

Capture depends in part on what happens between the receiver’s radio-frequency input and its demodulator output. Relevant characteristics include selectivity, limiter behavior, and demodulator bandwidth. The 1976 IEEE paper by K. Leentvaar and J. H. Flint analyzes two FM signals at a limiter and the instantaneous frequency of the resulting waveform. Its abstract reports that apparent capture can be extreme with an unlimited demodulator bandwidth, while a bandwidth-limited demodulator does not show the same extreme effect. The abstract also describes measurements and a method for calculating degree of capture.

That finding is a reason to treat capture as receiver-dependent, not as a fixed FM advantage. It does not supply a universal numerical comparison with PM receivers. FM and PM are both angle-modulation methods, but their practical interference behavior depends on the particular modulation and demodulation implementations being compared.

Factors that shape a particular case

Factor Why it matters
Relative wanted and interfering signal levels The outcome changes with the signals’ relative levels; the cited technical sources do not establish a universal capture threshold.
Frequency separation The 1978 CCIR discussion distinguishes interference near the wanted carrier from signals elsewhere within the receiver bandwidth.
Receiver selectivity and limiter behavior These affect how competing signals reach and pass through receiver stages; the 1976 IEEE study analyzes FM capture at the limiter.
Demodulator bandwidth The IEEE abstract reports less extreme capture with a bandwidth-limited demodulator than with unlimited bandwidth.
Modulation and demodulator implementation A general FM-versus-PM ranking is not established by the cited sources; compare the specific systems rather than assuming their receivers behave identically.
Service and applicable standard VHF FM broadcast transmission and planning standards do not automatically apply to other radio services or regions.

What pre-emphasis and de-emphasis do

In FM sound broadcasting, the transmitter applies pre-emphasis to the audio before transmission, and the receiver applies complementary de-emphasis after FM detection. Together, these operations shape and then restore the intended audio response while reducing the relative contribution of high-frequency noise in the recovered audio. An instructional textbook treatment explains this noise-shaping rationale.

This matched pair is a broadcast-system characteristic, not a general remedy for a competing station or other co-channel interference. A pre-emphasis time constant or noise-improvement figure should not be treated as universal: it must be tied to the relevant region, service, and standard.

How the VHF FM broadcast standards differ

Standard or source What it addresses Scope and qualification
ITU-R Recommendation BS.450-4 Transmission standards for FM sound broadcasting at VHF, including pre-emphasis provisions. The ITU records approval on 2019-10-14 and labels this recommendation in force. It concerns VHF FM sound broadcasting.
ITU-R Recommendation BS.412 Planning standards for terrestrial FM sound broadcasting at VHF, including RF protection ratios and interference conditions. It is a broadcast-planning standard, not a specification for every PM system or private-radio receiver. Check the applicable revision and status when those details matter.
CCIR technical discussion (1978) Historical explanation of vector interference and capture-like behavior in specified narrow-band cases. Useful for understanding the described mechanism; not a current consumer receiver specification.
Leentvaar and Flint, IEEE (1976) Analysis of capture in FM receivers, including the effect of demodulator bandwidth. The available evidence is the paper’s abstract; its reported findings should not be extended beyond that account.

Transmission standards and planning standards do different jobs. BS.450-4 covers transmission characteristics; BS.412 addresses broadcast planning and protection against interference. Neither should be generalized into a universal rule for all FM and PM equipment.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about FM versus PM

The evidence supports a qualitative explanation of interference and receiver-dependent capture, plus a specific finding that demodulator bandwidth affects the degree of capture in the FM receivers analyzed by Leentvaar and Flint. It does not support a universal numerical table ranking FM against PM, a single capture threshold for all receivers, or a general claim that one modulation always suppresses interference better.

For a meaningful comparison, identify the wanted and interfering signal levels, their frequency separation, the modulation details, the receiver’s filtering and limiter behavior, and its demodulator. For broadcast questions, also identify the applicable service, region, and standard. Without those conditions, a quoted threshold or performance figure can give a misleading impression of how another receiver will behave.
