Its significance is conditional: it can make products more relevant and the buying process more engaging, but only when customers can navigate the choices and the business can reliably produce what they select.
What interactive mass customisation means
Mass customisation aims to meet individual customer needs without giving up the efficiency of producing at scale. Interactive mass customisation adds a customer-facing role in shaping the offer: people might choose among predefined features, assemble modules, or take part in a more open co-design process.

The interaction is not the whole system. A company also needs product designs that accommodate variation, processes capable of producing different configurations, and coordination across its supply chain. A polished configurator cannot compensate for production or delivery processes that cannot fulfil the choices it presents.
Why it can matter to customers
Customisation can create value in more than one way. A configuration may fit a customer’s practical needs better, while the act of shaping it can support uniqueness, self-expression, enjoyment, or a sense of creative accomplishment. These are possible sources of value, not guaranteed outcomes for every product or customer.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Interaction can also help customers express preferences that are difficult to capture with a one-size-fits-all product. Configurators, recommendation systems, and visualisation tools can explain options and make the consequences of choices easier to understand. Their usefulness depends on whether the options are meaningful and the interface gives customers enough guidance to choose confidently.
Why it can matter to businesses
For a business, the strategic aim is to offer relevant variety while keeping design, production, and fulfilment coordinated. Modular product design, flexible processes, and supply-chain integration are among the approaches discussed in mass-customisation research. The challenge is balancing the range of customer-facing choices against the complexity those choices create behind the scenes.

A 2025 systematic review by Naldi, Galizia, Bortolini, Gabellini, and Ferrari maps research published from 2011 through 2024. Its Scopus search retrieved 3,441 publications, of which 229 were selected and manually assigned to thematic streams. The authors organise the field around mass-customisation concepts and metrics, enabling technologies and methods, and supply-chain management. Those counts describe the review’s search and selection process; they are not measures of market size or commercial impact.

How to judge whether an approach is likely to work
Compare a customisation experience across the customer journey and the production system, rather than judging it only by the number of options it offers.
| Question | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Are the choices relevant? | Customers choose meaningful product dimensions rather than face a large catalogue of low-value variations. |
| Does the interaction help? | Options are explained, and configurators, recommendations, or visualisations help customers understand the result. |
| Can customers decide confidently? | The process lets people express preferences without requiring excessive design expertise or creating avoidable decision fatigue. |
| Can the business deliver the configuration? | Design, manufacturing, and supply-chain processes can reliably handle the selected combinations. |
| What integration work is required? | The company accounts for data management, coordination, and connection to existing systems. |
| How much co-design is involved? | The offer makes clear whether customers select predefined modules or participate in a more open design process. |
The trade-off: relevance versus complexity
More choice is not automatically more value. A broad or confusing set of options can make customers uncertain, increase effort, and undermine the appeal of personalisation. Stiris, Dall’Olmo Riley, and Singh’s 2026 study discusses both positive value dimensions and complexity or anxiety in the context of online luxury gift customisation. That context is specific; it does not establish that the same effects, or their size, apply across other products and sectors.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The practical implication is to offer a manageable set of consequential choices and support customers as they make them. The business must also ensure that each offered configuration is feasible to produce and fulfil. Customer-facing variety and operational capability need to be designed together.
What AI may change—and what remains unproven
A 2026 article by Jing Wang, Cuiqin Lan, and Xiaoyi Wang proposes an AI-driven Mass Personalized Customization workflow for fashion. It connects user-intent recognition, design generation, virtual try-on, manufacturing, and feedback analysis. The article presents this as a proposed paradigm with an apparel case study, not as a proven or dominant model across fashion retail.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The proposal points toward a possible shift from choosing among predefined combinations to collaborating on generated designs. That deeper customisation may offer more expressive freedom, but it also raises the importance of translating customer intent into a manufacturable design and connecting the digital interaction with physical production. The article does not establish that this workflow delivers better commercial outcomes generally.
Barriers to implementation
The 2025 review identifies several adoption challenges, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises:
- Initial investment costs.
- Integration with legacy systems.
- Managing data in real time.
- Limited digital readiness.
These constraints matter because interactive customisation depends on information moving between the customer interface and the systems responsible for design, production, and fulfilment. A company may need to narrow its offering or improve those connections before expanding the range of configurations.

Does interactive mass customisation improve results?
It can create a stronger fit between an offering and a customer’s needs, and the design process itself can add experiential value. But the available studies described here do not establish a universal causal improvement in sales, satisfaction, or profit, nor a cross-industry figure for the size of any effect. Outcomes depend on the product, the choice experience, and the firm’s ability to deliver the selected configurations.
