Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) is storage-management software and a driver layer for supported Intel-based computers. It can manage RAID volumes and, on compatible systems, accelerate storage using supported hardware. It is not a drive, and installing it cannot add support to a computer whose platform does not support it.

What Intel Rapid Storage Technology does

Intel describes RST as a Windows-based application for storage performance and reliability. Its functions include managing RAID volumes and supporting certain storage-acceleration configurations, subject to the computer’s platform, BIOS, drives, operating system, and matching driver. Intel’s RST user guide describes RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10, but a particular computer may support only some of those options.

RST is the software and driver layer; an SSD or hard drive is the physical storage device. RAID combines multiple drives into a volume. Depending on its level and configuration, RAID can prioritize performance, redundancy, or capacity, but it does not replace a backup.

Do you need Intel RST?

You generally need the RST driver if your computer’s storage setup relies on it—for example, a manufacturer-configured RAID volume or another supported RST feature. If your computer uses a standard single-drive configuration and its manufacturer does not specify RST, you may not need to install or manage it separately. Seeing an RST entry in a BIOS or driver list alone does not establish that you should change settings or install a different package.

Check the PC or motherboard maker’s specifications and support page, and identify the current storage configuration before making a change. Manufacturer-specific drivers may differ from Intel’s generic packages; Intel’s user guide advises consulting the system vendor when its guidance does not match the computer.

RST compatibility depends on the exact platform

There is no single RST package that applies to every Intel computer. Intel’s support index lists packages by platform and processor generation. For example, Intel’s listing includes driver 20.2.6.1025.3 for 12th–15th Gen Intel Core platforms, with supported Windows releases specified on the package page. That page also describes RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 configuration and VMD support where the platform has a VMD-capable BIOS. These details do not make that package suitable for every computer.

Intel also lists driver 19.5.8.1059.2 for 12th–13th Gen platforms, illustrating that similarly named packages can target different platform ranges. Check the exact package’s readme and release notes, along with the computer maker’s support page, before installing. Intel notes that operating-system support can vary by driver release; its guide also warns that manufacturers customize drivers for their system designs.

Can you disable RST or change the storage mode?

Do not casually switch AHCI, RAID, or VMD settings in BIOS on a working computer. On the configurations covered by Intel’s VMD guidance, changing storage settings after Windows installation can produce an “Inaccessible Boot Device” error. BIOS labels and supported procedures vary by manufacturer. Intel presents its VMD setup instructions as reference material for system vendors and expert users, and directs users to their system vendor for platform-specific help.

If your goal is to remove a driver or change storage modes, first establish whether Windows boots through an RST-managed volume and follow the PC or motherboard maker’s instructions for that exact model. A setting change can prevent the operating system from starting, so do not treat disabling RST as a harmless cleanup step.

What to know before setting up RAID or buying a drive

On supported systems, RAID setup may require selecting RAID or Intel RST as the BIOS storage-controller mode and then creating a volume in BIOS or supported management software. The specific steps and available RAID levels depend on the manufacturer and platform. Intel recommends confirming the system is configured for RAID and checking the applicable package’s readme and release notes. Consult Intel’s guide together with the system maker’s instructions rather than applying generic BIOS steps.

  • Decide whether the goal is performance, redundancy, or capacity; RAID level affects the trade-offs.
  • Check the required number and type of drives, supported interfaces, BIOS features, and available RAID levels for your system.
  • Confirm that the operating system and driver package support the platform.
  • Consider what happens if a drive fails, and keep backups regardless of RAID configuration.

If you are considering a SATA SSD or another storage drive, verify that the computer supports its interface and configuration before purchasing. RST itself is not a drive upgrade, and a compatible drive alone does not establish that RAID or acceleration will be supported.

How Optane fits into older RST information

Some older RST documentation describes Intel Optane Memory as a storage-acceleration option. That does not mean every Optane module works with every RST release or current platform. Intel’s RST 19.x compatibility notice says Intel Optane Memory Series and M10 Series devices are not supported in the platform context described there. Check the exact module, system, BIOS, and driver compatibility rather than relying on an older feature description.
