No—not every Intel Core i5 needs a separate graphics card. Many desktop i5 processors include Intel processor graphics, but desktop models with an F suffix, such as the i5-14400F, do not. Check the complete processor model before buying parts or troubleshooting a blank screen.
Does an Intel Core i5 have integrated graphics?
Sometimes. “Core i5” identifies a processor family, not one specific model or a guarantee that graphics hardware is included. Intel’s desktop i5 information lists many models with Intel UHD or HD processor graphics and separately identifies models without them. The exact model and suffix are what matter.

When a processor includes graphics, it can provide display output without a separate graphics card, provided the rest of the computer supports that connection. A separate card may still be useful for a graphics-intensive workload, but the presence of an i5 alone does not establish what level of graphics performance you need.

For Intel desktop Core processors, the F suffix indicates that discrete graphics are required. Intel Support states: “If your Intel® Core™ Desktop Processor includes the letter F in the product line suffix, then you need to use a discrete graphics card in your system.” The support article was last reviewed April 28, 2022.

- Performance hybrid architecture integrates two core microarchitectures, prioritizing and distributing workloads to optimize performance
- Up to 4.7 GHz unlocked. 20MB Cache
- Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) and 700-series chipset-based motherboards
- PCIe 5.0 and 4.0 support. DDR4 and DDR5 Memory support. RM1 thermal solution included. Discrete graphics required.
For example, Intel’s desktop i5 listing identifies the i5-14400F and i5-14600KF as models without Intel processor graphics. If you choose an F-suffix desktop i5, plan to install a compatible discrete graphics card; the motherboard’s display connectors cannot replace the graphics hardware the processor lacks.
How to check your exact processor
- Find the full model name. Check the processor box, purchase invoice, computer’s system information, or the manufacturer’s product page. Include every number and suffix, not just “i5.”
- Look up that model in Intel’s specifications. Check the processor-graphics entry or whether Intel lists the model among desktop processors without Intel processor graphics. Intel’s desktop i5 information was last reviewed February 6, 2025; its boxed desktop processors without processor graphics list was last reviewed March 11, 2026.
- Use the suffix as a quick check, not a substitute for the full specification. Intel’s naming guide defines F as requiring discrete graphics and was last reviewed December 9, 2025. Suffix conventions vary across product segments, so do not apply desktop guidance indiscriminately to laptop, all-in-one, or embedded processors.
For a laptop, all-in-one, or prebuilt system, check the complete processor specification and the device maker’s details. The system’s graphics configuration and available display connections depend on the device, not just the i5 family name.

What to check if an i5 computer has no display
A blank screen does not by itself prove that the processor needs a graphics card. First establish whether the exact CPU has processor graphics or requires a discrete card.
Recommended Free Tools
- If the desktop CPU ends in F: confirm that a discrete graphics card is installed. Connect the monitor to the card’s display output, rather than relying on the motherboard’s video connector. Intel warns that using an integrated-graphics port with an F-suffix desktop processor will not boot.
- If the CPU includes processor graphics: a separate card is not inherently required for graphics output. Check that the monitor is connected to a supported output on the computer and that the system’s components and configuration are correct.
- If it is a laptop or prebuilt system: use the exact device documentation as well as the processor specification; desktop suffix guidance does not describe every system implementation.
What the i5 name cannot tell you about graphics performance
Whether a processor has graphics is a model-specific fact; whether those graphics suit a particular game, creative application, or other workload is a separate question. Intel’s model listings establish graphics presence or absence, not performance benchmarks. They do not provide a workload-specific threshold or identify a suitable graphics-card tier. Choose a card, if needed or desired, based on the workload and system compatibility rather than assuming all i5 systems have the same graphics needs.
