Choose dedicated graphics when those workloads benefit from a separate graphics processor and its own memory. The trade-off is typically higher graphics performance in exchange for more power use and heat. Some laptops include both and switch between them, but support and behavior vary by model.
What integrated and dedicated graphics mean
Integrated graphics
An integrated GPU is built into the processor and uses shared system memory. Intel says this arrangement typically uses less power and creates less heat than discrete graphics, though actual results depend on the laptop configuration. Intel’s comparison of integrated and discrete graphics was last reviewed on September 4, 2024.

Dedicated graphics
A dedicated, or discrete, GPU is a separate graphics processor with its own graphics memory. It generally offers more graphics performance, but typically uses more power and produces more heat. The words “dedicated graphics” on a listing do not establish how fast a particular laptop will be: the GPU configuration and the laptop’s power and cooling design matter.
Which type fits your workload?
| What matters | Integrated graphics | Dedicated graphics | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical fit | Everyday productivity, web use, video playback, and lighter graphics demands | Games and creative applications that benefit from stronger GPU performance | Requirements for the specific apps or games you use |
| Graphics memory | Uses shared system memory | Has dedicated graphics memory | Total system RAM and, for a discrete GPU, its memory capacity |
| Power and heat | Typically lower graphics power use and heat | Typically higher graphics power use and heat | Independent measurements of the exact laptop under a relevant workload |
| Performance variability | Depends on the processor and memory setup | Depends on the GPU and the laptop’s power and cooling configuration | Exact laptop configuration and model-specific review data |
How to choose for your actual use
Choose integrated graphics for general work
If your routine is office applications, browsing, video playback, and similar tasks, integrated graphics is usually the sensible starting point. It avoids paying the power and heat costs of a more capable GPU when your workload does not need one. Check the requirements of any specialist software you rely on; “integrated” is not a guarantee that every application will run well.

Consider dedicated graphics for demanding games or creative work
If a game or creative application benefits from a discrete GPU, compare the exact GPU and laptop configuration against that software’s requirements. Check the resolution and quality settings you want to use, and look for model-specific performance measurements. NVIDIA markets RTX laptop GPUs for gaming and creator workloads, while noting that performance varies by laptop model; a GPU family name alone is not a reliable performance estimate. NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series laptop page describes those use cases, but its listed generation should not be treated as a statement of current availability.
Look at hybrid graphics if you need both mobility and GPU power
Some laptops contain integrated and discrete GPUs and can use one or the other depending on the task. Intel describes using integrated graphics for battery-conscious operation and discrete graphics for performance, but warns that not every computer supports switching and that controls vary by manufacturer and model. Intel’s switchable-graphics guidance was last reviewed on February 14, 2025. Before buying, confirm that the exact laptop supports switching and that the software you care about can use its discrete GPU.

What hybrid switching does—and what it does not promise
Some NVIDIA laptops with Advanced Optimus can automatically choose whether the GeForce GPU or integrated graphics drives the internal display, based on the running application. Availability is model-specific. NVIDIA reported gaming frame-rate gains “from 11% to 27%, and beyond, in a wide range of games” compared with Optimus and non-Optimus laptops in a 2022 vendor benchmark. That is NVIDIA’s tested claim, not an independent or universal result for every laptop. NVIDIA’s Advanced Optimus explanation, dated February 11, 2022, provides its benchmark context and notes that performance varies by laptop model.

Understand shared graphics memory before comparing specifications
An operating system’s stated maximum shared graphics memory is not necessarily memory permanently reserved for the integrated GPU. Intel’s Windows graphics-memory FAQ says shared memory is system memory and that the reported amount is a limit on what the operating system may allow graphics to use. Compare that figure with total system RAM carefully; it is not equivalent to a discrete GPU’s dedicated memory. Intel’s graphics-memory FAQ was last reviewed on January 13, 2026.

Compare complete laptop models, not just GPU labels
Once you know which category suits your workload, compare the full laptop configurations. GPU performance and battery behavior depend on more than the label: processor, cooling, power settings, display, and the exact GPU configuration all affect the result. For battery life or sustained performance, use independent measurements of the exact model under comparable conditions. The cited official guidance establishes directional power and heat trade-offs, not a universal number of battery hours gained or lost.
