Integrated graphics are usually enough for everyday computing, while a dedicated (discrete) GPU is worth considering when your games or creative applications need more graphics performance. The right choice depends on the specific GPU and workload—not just the label—and on laptop power, cooling, memory, and upgrade limits.
What is the difference between integrated and dedicated graphics?
Integrated graphics are built into a processor or system and generally use system memory. A discrete, often called dedicated, GPU is a separate graphics processor with its own graphics-memory resources. Intel explains that integrated graphics do not use a separate graphics memory bank in its integrated-versus-discrete graphics overview.

These terms describe designs, not guaranteed performance levels. GPU generation and model, memory configuration, power limits, cooling, and software support all affect what a particular computer can do. Compare the exact GPU and system configuration rather than assuming every discrete GPU outperforms every integrated one.

For web browsing, office applications, video playback, and other general tasks, integrated graphics may be sufficient. Intel describes built-in graphics as suitable for common computing uses in its CPU-versus-GPU guide. Your needs still depend on display setup and the particular integrated GPU.

Integrated graphics share system memory, so total RAM and its configuration matter to the computer as a whole. A number labeled “dedicated video memory” in software may be a compatibility or reporting figure, not a physically separate pool of VRAM. Intel explains this distinction in its graphics-memory FAQ and guidance on adjusting dedicated video memory for Intel graphics. AMD also describes how integrated systems use shared memory in its overview of UMA frame-buffer size.
Do you need a dedicated graphics card for gaming or creative work?
A discrete GPU is a stronger candidate when you play demanding games or use GPU-heavy applications such as 3D work or CAD. Intel’s CAD graphics overview discusses graphics needs by workload, but it is vendor guidance rather than an independent benchmark comparison. Check the exact application requirements and GPU model; there is no universal performance threshold that makes every discrete GPU suitable for every game or project.

For video editing and encoding, do not assume the discrete GPU is always the deciding factor. Acceleration varies by application, codec, hardware support, and which graphics device is enabled. Intel Quick Sync, for example, provides hardware video encoding and decoding, and its availability can depend on integrated graphics being enabled even when a separate GPU is installed. See Intel’s Quick Sync guidance for systems using a separate GPU.

Many laptops combine integrated and discrete graphics. They can use integrated graphics for lighter tasks and switch to the discrete GPU for heavier rendering, helping balance performance and power use. AMD describes this approach in its switchable-graphics configuration guide; NVIDIA also explains hybrid routing and power-saving behavior through Optimus.

The discrete GPU may not render every task or drive the display directly. Routing depends on the laptop’s design, settings, and drivers; some systems provide a display multiplexer setting for choosing which GPU drives the display, as described in NVIDIA Control Panel Help. For laptop compatibility, AMD advises considering the computer manufacturer’s drivers in its switchable-graphics guidance.
How should power, battery life, and cooling affect your choice?
A discrete GPU has its own power demands, and laptop performance depends on the system’s thermal and power limits. Hybrid graphics can leave the discrete GPU idle during lighter work, but actual battery life varies with the laptop, its settings, and what you run. A discrete GPU does not guarantee a particular battery-life reduction, just as hybrid operation does not guarantee a specific battery-life improvement.

Laptops
Do not plan on adding or replacing a laptop GPU unless the manufacturer explicitly documents that option. Intel says that adding a dedicated graphics card to a laptop is generally not possible because of technical limitations in its guidance on adding dedicated graphics.
Desktops
A desktop with integrated graphics may accept an add-in graphics card, but check the specific computer’s compatibility and manufacturer specifications before buying. Installing a discrete card can also disable onboard graphics in some desktop configurations, so do not assume the two will always operate together. Intel covers these considerations in its graphics-card installation guidance.

How to choose between integrated and dedicated graphics
| Priority | What to check | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Office work, web, and streaming | Specific integrated GPU, system RAM, and display needs | Integrated graphics may be enough for general use. |
| Gaming, CAD, 3D, or demanding creative work | Exact GPU model, application requirements, graphics memory, and—in laptops—power and cooling | Consider a discrete GPU when the workload requires it; verify the particular model rather than relying on the category name. |
| Portability and battery priority | Laptop design, hybrid-graphics behavior, power profile, and workload | Hybrid systems may use integrated graphics for lighter tasks, but battery results are model-dependent. |
| Video editing or encoding | Application support, codec features, and which GPU is enabled | Check whether the software uses integrated graphics, a discrete GPU, or both for the task you need. |
| Future upgrade | Laptop or desktop form factor and manufacturer specifications | Assume a laptop GPU is not upgradeable unless the manufacturer says otherwise; verify desktop compatibility before purchasing a card. |
