Installing TCP/IP: How to Configure or Repair It on Windows, Mac, and Linux

You rarely install TCP/IP on a modern computer. This guide explains how to configure DHCP or static IPv4/IPv6 settings, verify connectivity, and repair the Windows, macOS, or Linux network stack when configuration is not the real problem.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You usually do not install TCP/IP anymore. On current Windows, macOS, and mainstream Linux systems, the TCP/IP networking stack is built in. What people call “installing TCP/IP” normally means configuring an adapter for DHCP or a static address, or repairing a damaged network stack.

Use the decision path below: confirm the adapter and link, choose the correct addressing method, verify the address and route, test DNS separately, and reset networking only when the evidence points to corruption.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What “install TCP/IP” actually means

TCP/IP is a family of protocols, not a downloadable application. IP supplies addressing and routing; TCP provides reliable, connection-oriented delivery; UDP provides connectionless transport used by many lightweight or latency-sensitive services. DNS translates names into IP addresses, while DHCP supplies network settings automatically. They work with the adapter, driver, operating-system stack, firewall, and upstream network, but none of those components is identical to TCP/IP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a normal modern computer, the practical job is to configure the network service. Microsoft documents a special Windows command, netsh interface ipv4 install, for installing the IP protocol in legacy or specialized situations; it is not the normal first step on Windows 11. See the Microsoft netsh interface documentation.

Prepare before changing settings

  • Identify the operating system and version, and whether the connection is Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
  • Record the exact adapter or network-service name.
  • Determine whether the network expects DHCP or a static address.
  • If static configuration is required, obtain the IP address, subnet mask or prefix, default gateway, DNS servers, and any required routes or search domains from the administrator or router documentation.
  • Keep a way to undo the change. Do not invent a static address; Ubuntu’s guidance likewise assumes you already know the correct values or can obtain them from an administrator (Ubuntu network configuration).
  • Use administrator privileges for Windows reset commands and for most Linux system-wide changes.

Choose DHCP or a static address

DHCP for ordinary clients

DHCP normally supplies an address, subnet mask or prefix, default gateway, DNS servers, and lease information. It is the usual choice for home computers, laptops, phones, and workstations. Windows clients are normally configured to obtain IPv4 settings automatically through DHCP, according to Microsoft’s DHCP deployment guidance.

DHCP reduces typing and address conflicts, but an address can change and a failed DHCP server can leave the client without a usable lease. A server or printer that must remain at a known address may instead use a DHCP reservation or an approved static configuration.

Static addressing when the network requires it

A manual configuration generally needs an IP address, subnet mask or CIDR prefix, default gateway, and DNS servers. It may also require search domains, custom routes, VLAN details, or a DHCP client identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Static addresses are predictable for servers, infrastructure, printers, and controlled labs. The risks are equally concrete: duplicate addresses can cause intermittent failures, a wrong prefix can put the host on the wrong subnet, a wrong gateway can block off-subnet traffic, and incorrect DNS can break names while numeric IP connections still work. Keep static values outside the DHCP pool unless the network administrator has designed the address plan.

IPv4 and IPv6 are separate configurations

IPv4 commonly uses an address such as 192.168.1.50, a mask such as 255.255.255.0 (equivalent to /24), a gateway such as 192.168.1.1, and DNS server addresses. IPv6 may use router advertisements and SLAAC, DHCPv6, or manual address and prefix settings. Do not mechanically copy IPv4 values into IPv6, and do not disable IPv6 as a reflex; diagnose its routing, advertisements, DNS, or application behavior first.

Windows 11: configure TCP/IP

Settings app

  1. Open Settings and select Network & internet.
  2. Select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then open the connected network or adapter properties.
  3. Find IP assignment and select Edit.
  4. Choose Automatic (DHCP) for normal automatic setup, or Manual to enter IPv4 and/or IPv6 values.
  5. For manual IPv4, enter the address, subnet prefix length or mask, gateway, and required preferred and alternate DNS servers. Enter the corresponding IPv6 address, prefix length, and router when supplied.
  6. Save. Disconnect and reconnect the adapter if the change is not applied immediately.

Classic adapter properties

  1. Press Win+R, enter ncpa.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Right-click the adapter and choose Properties.
  3. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), then choose Properties.
  4. Select automatic addressing or enter the supplied static values, then confirm with OK.

These are configuration steps, not a TCP/IP installation.

Inspect and refresh DHCP

Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run:

ipconfig
ipconfig /all
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig displays current IPv4/IPv6 addresses, masks, gateways, and related information; Microsoft documents these options at ipconfig. Release and renew are intended for DHCP adapters, and releasing a remote or production system can disconnect it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure a static IPv4 address with netsh

First identify the exact interface name:

netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces

netsh interface ipv4 set dnsservers name="Ethernet" source=static address=192.168.1.1 register=primary

To return the adapter to DHCP:

netsh interface ipv4 set address name="Ethernet" source=dhcp
netsh interface ipv4 set dnsservers name="Ethernet" source=dhcp

Microsoft documents these address and DNS operations in the netsh interface reference.

When Windows actually needs protocol installation

For historical or specialized cases, Microsoft documents:

netsh interface ipv4 install

The command installs the IP protocol and requires a restart. It is an exception for a damaged or unusual deployment, not a routine Windows 11 repair.

Reset Windows networking only after recording settings

Back up the current configuration:

netsh -c interface dump > C:netConfig.txt

In an elevated Command Prompt, run:

netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset

Restart Windows afterward. Microsoft’s TCP/IP troubleshooting guidance recommends backing up, resetting, restarting, and then investigating drivers or third-party filter components. netsh winsock reset restores the Winsock catalog to a clean state (Microsoft Winsock reference). A reset can remove custom static settings, VPN integrations, proxy behavior, or security-software components, so record those first.

macOS: enter TCP/IP settings

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and select Network.
  2. Select the service, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then choose Details.
  3. Open TCP/IP.
  4. For IPv4, select DHCP or Manual. Manual setup requires the IPv4 address, subnet mask, and router address.
  5. For IPv6, select the method supplied by the network and enter the IPv6 address, prefix length, and router when required.
  6. Enter a DHCP Client ID only if the administrator requires one, then select OK.

Apple documents this path and the IPv4/IPv6 fields at Configure TCP/IP settings on Mac. Wi-Fi and Ethernet have separate services; VPNs can add services, routes, and DNS resolvers. A failed DHCP lease should prompt checks of the access point, cable, VLAN, and DHCP scope rather than an arbitrary static address.

Ubuntu and NetworkManager Linux

Ubuntu Desktop

  1. Open Settings and select Network for wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi for wireless.
  2. Select the settings button beside the connection, then open the IPv4 or IPv6 tab.
  3. Leave the method automatic/DHCP for automatic setup, or choose Manual.
  4. For manual setup, enter the address, gateway, netmask or prefix, and DNS servers. Disable automatic DNS only when necessary; add custom routes only when the network requires them.
  5. Select Apply, reconnect if needed, and test local and internet access.

See Ubuntu’s manual network configuration guide.

NetworkManager with nmcli

These commands apply to NetworkManager-managed systems. First inspect devices and profiles:

nmcli device status
nmcli connection show

Create and activate a DHCP Ethernet profile:

sudo nmcli connection add type ethernet ifname eth0 con-name office-dhcp ipv4.method auto
sudo nmcli connection up office-dhcp

Modern systems may call the interface enp3s0, eno1, or another name; substitute the actual result from nmcli device status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a static profile and add DNS:

sudo nmcli connection add type ethernet ifname enp3s0 con-name office-static
  ipv4.method manual
  ipv4.addresses 192.168.1.50/24
  ipv4.gateway 192.168.1.1
sudo nmcli connection modify office-static ipv4.dns "192.168.1.1 1.1.1.1"
sudo nmcli connection up office-static

NetworkManager defines ipv4.method auto for automatic assignment and ipv4.method manual for static addresses; manual mode requires an address and prefix (NetworkManager settings reference). Red Hat shows the same general nmcli connection add, modify, and up workflow (Red Hat NetworkManager examples). The DNS address in the example is not a universal recommendation; use the resolver required by the network.

Verify the result in layers

Address and route

  • Confirm a valid address for the intended network, the expected mask or prefix, and no duplicate-address warning.
  • On Windows, an address beginning 169.254 commonly indicates Automatic Private IP Addressing after DHCP was unavailable or unsuccessful; confirm with ipconfig /all.
  • Confirm a default gateway when off-subnet or internet access is expected.

Use route print on Windows, ip route on Linux, and the service’s TCP/IP details or diagnostics on macOS.

Test DNS independently

Test numeric connectivity and name resolution separately:

ping 1.1.1.1
nslookup example.com

On Linux, you can also run:

resolvectl status
nmcli device show
ping -c 4 127.0.0.1
ping -c 4 <local-gateway>
ping -c 4 1.1.1.1
ping -c 4 example.com
  • Loopback success shows that the local stack responds.
  • Gateway success suggests the local link and route are working.
  • Public IP success with hostname failure points to DNS, not an absent TCP/IP stack.
  • Gateway failure points toward the adapter, Wi-Fi or VLAN, address, subnet, or gateway.

ICMP may be blocked, so a failed ping alone does not prove that a host or service is unreachable. Finally test the real application: a website, file share, remote-desktop session, or intended server. Firewalls, proxies, TLS, authentication, and application ports can fail while TCP/IP works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Investigate first
No adapter appears Driver, disabled hardware, BIOS/firmware, or device failure
Wi-Fi cannot associate Password, access point, radio, authentication, or signal
Windows shows a 169.254.x.x address DHCP availability, cable/Wi-Fi, VLAN, or DHCP scope
Local devices work but internet does not Default gateway, router/WAN, firewall, or route
IP access works but names fail DNS configuration, reachability, VPN policy, or resolver service
Only one application fails Application, proxy, firewall, TLS, or authentication
Failure begins when a VPN starts VPN routes, DNS, split tunneling, or filter drivers
Static setup works only temporarily Duplicate address, DHCP conflict, reservation, or competing interface
A reset helps only briefly Underlying driver, VPN, security software, or hardware problem

Special cases

  • A wrong prefix can make supposed local hosts appear remote, or make remote hosts appear local.
  • A duplicate IPv4 address can produce ARP instability and intermittent “works sometimes” behavior.
  • Ethernet, Wi-Fi, VPNs, virtual machines, and containers can create competing routes and DNS resolvers. Inspect route metrics and change only the intended interface.
  • Enterprise networks may require 802.1X, VLAN assignment, NAC approval, proxy settings, internal DNS, or firewall-zone changes that a home walkthrough cannot supply.
  • Do not reset a remote machine’s active interface without out-of-band access; a bad static value or reset can end the management session.
  • Current Linux distributions may use NetworkManager or netplan rather than legacy ifconfig or /etc/network/interfaces; follow the configuration system that owns the interface.

When to involve an administrator or ISP

Ask for help when you do not know the approved static values, the network uses 802.1X, VLANs, NAC, internal DNS, or proxy rules, or the system is a production server. Escalate after verifying the adapter, address, route, DNS, and application if the fault may be a failed cable, access point, DHCP server, router, ISP link, driver, or hardware component.
