Anaconda’s official sources do not explicitly name Debian 12 as a supported system, so the steps below are the standard Linux route rather than a Debian-certified one. The support section explains exactly what is and is not established.
Anaconda Distribution or Miniconda?
In this guide, “Anaconda” means Anaconda Distribution, the Python and data science package that ships with Python, Jupyter Notebook, JupyterLab, package management, and a curated set of packages. It is not the anaconda conda metapackage on its own, and it is unrelated to Red Hat’s operating-system installer. Miniconda is the smaller alternative: a minimal installer with conda, Python, and a small set of packages.
The choice comes down to how much you want preinstalled and how much disk space you can spare.
| Item | Anaconda Distribution | Miniconda |
|---|---|---|
| What it includes | Python, Jupyter Notebook, JupyterLab, package management, curated packages | conda, Python, and a small set of packages |
| Linux installer format | Command-line .sh shell installer |

| Linux architectures listed | x86_64 and aarch64 (archive listing dated 2026-07-29) | x86_64 and aarch64 |
| Installer file size | 1.1 GB for Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-x86_64.sh (download size, not installed size) |

| Stated minimum storage | Not stated for installed footprint in the sources reviewed | 400 MB minimum (Miniconda system requirements page; year not stated) |
| Debian 12 support | Not explicitly stated | Broad Linux support described; no Debian 12 statement |
Pick Anaconda Distribution if you want Jupyter and a broad set of packages ready on first login. Pick Miniconda if you want to add only the packages a project needs and keep the initial footprint small.

Does Anaconda work on Debian 12?
The official sources reviewed do not explicitly state that Anaconda Distribution supports Debian 12. Miniconda’s requirements page describes broad Linux support, and it specifically notes that its aarch64 installer requires glibc 2.26 or later and does not work on Debian 9. That exclusion concerns Debian 9 and the Miniconda aarch64 installer. It is not a statement about Anaconda Distribution on Debian 12, and it is not a Debian 12 guarantee. If you need a written compatibility commitment, check Anaconda’s current documentation before you rely on the install in production.
Before you start
- Confirm your architecture. Run
uname -min a terminal.x86_64means you need the x86_64 installer;aarch64means you need the aarch64 installer. Any other output means the Linux installers listed in the sources reviewed will not match your machine. - Plan for the download size. The x86_64 installer listed in the archive is 1.1 GB. The installed footprint of Anaconda Distribution is not stated in the sources reviewed, so leave generous free space beyond the download.
- Have terminal access as your regular user, with the ability to write to your home directory.
Download the right installer
- Open Anaconda’s official download archive (the “Index of /archive” page) and locate the newest Linux installer. The listing reviewed for this article includes
Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-x86_64.shandAnaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-aarch64.sh, with the x86_64 entry dated 2026-07-29. Filenames change with each release, so check the live archive for a newer build rather than reusing an old name. - Download the file that matches the output of
uname -m.
Verify the SHA256 checksum
Before running anything, confirm that the file you downloaded is the exact file Anaconda published. Compare its SHA256 digest with the value listed next to that installer in the same archive.
Rank #2
- In the directory where you saved the file, run
sha256sum Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-x86_64.sh. - Compare the printed digest with the value listed in the archive for that exact file. For the 2026.07-1 x86_64 installer in the archive listing reviewed, the value is
9f49042048e9a8220c1cddf9192054290724052d3b2a86f938f9f5edd911db8f. - If the digests match, continue. If they differ, delete the file and download it again. Do not run a file whose checksum does not match.
The checksum above belongs only to the 2026.07-1 x86_64 build. For a newer release, use the digest published beside that release’s file.
Run the installer
The Linux Anaconda Distribution installer is a command-line .sh shell script, so you run it from a terminal in the directory where you saved it. Follow the current Anaconda Distribution Linux installation instructions for the release you downloaded. Prompts and exact commands change between releases, so they are not reproduced here. Read each prompt before accepting it, including the license terms.

Troubleshooting
- The installer will not start or the file seems unusable. Confirm that you downloaded the installer that matches
uname -m. The archive publishes separate x86_64 and aarch64 Linux builds, and the wrong one will not suit your machine. - The checksum does not match. The download may be incomplete or corrupted, or you may have a different release than you think. Delete the file, download it again from the archive, and recompute the digest.
- You are unsure whether Debian 12 is supported. The sources reviewed do not confirm Debian 12 support for Anaconda Distribution. Use the Miniconda requirements page only as a reference for Miniconda, not as proof for Anaconda Distribution.
- Disk space is tight. Miniconda has a stated 400 MB minimum, which may suit a smaller machine. The Anaconda Distribution installed footprint is not stated in the sources reviewed, so measure your free space against the 1.1 GB download and plan for more.
Licensing for organizations
Anaconda’s organization licensing summary states that organizations with more than 200 employees or contractors may need a paid business license, unless they qualify for a discount or free-use exception. The sources reviewed do not give a publication year for that page, so check the current terms before deploying the install at work.
