How you install a banjo pickup depends on the design you buy. Kavanjo mounts its magnetic humbucking pickup on a customized replacement head, Fishman’s Classic Series attaches to the coordinator rods under the head, and Schatten’s BJ-02 sits on the inside of the existing head, directly beneath the bridge. Before you open the banjo, confirm that the pickup fits your instrument, then follow the installation guide for that exact model. If the job involves removing the head, soldering, or setup work you are not comfortable with, have a qualified banjo repair technician do it.
Compare the three mounting designs
The mounting method determines almost everything else: whether you replace the head, which tools you need, and how much fit checking comes first. The table below reflects what each manufacturer’s material states. Where a point is not addressed in the material reviewed, the cell says so.

| Pickup | Mounting method | Head replacement | Fit limits stated by the maker | Tools and soldering | Professional installation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kavanjo (customized head) | Magnetic humbucking pickup suspended from a customized mylar head | Yes. The pickup ships already installed on the new head. | Sold in 4-, 5-, and 6-string versions | Not stated in the installation steps reviewed; the guide mentions attaching a ground wire to metal inside the banjo | Strongly suggested by Kavanjo |
| Fishman Classic Series | Pickup located by its magnet over a blue shim on the underside of the head, between the coordinator rods | Not stated | Designed for dual-coordinator-rod banjos; Fishman says it may be modified for single-rod banjos | 1/8-inch hex wrench, wrenches, and a soldering iron | Recommended for an experienced repair technician |
| Schatten BJ-02 | Sensor mounted on the inside surface of the head, directly under the center foot of the bridge, using supplied 3M VHB tape or five-minute epoxy | No. It mounts under the existing head. | Depends on the jack assembly version; see the Schatten section below | Not stated in the instructions reviewed | Not stated in the instructions reviewed |
Installing each type
Kavanjo: transferring the pickup to a customized head
Kavanjo’s system is a replacement head, so the work is essentially a head swap with the pickup already in place. Kavanjo’s guide begins by placing the banjo on a soft surface so the finish is protected while you work.

- Loosen the tensioning hardware until the hoop and head can be lifted off the rim.
- Align the mounting holes of the new head with the pickup and start the screws gently. If a screw binds, back it off rather than forcing it. Cross-threading can damage the pickup.
- Set the head evenly on the rim with its center line aligned to the neck. Replace the hoop and nuts, then tighten in gradual rotations so pressure builds evenly.
- Reconnect the output jack. Attach the jack’s ground wire to bare metal inside the banjo, such as a flange lug or a coordinator rod.
- Restring the banjo, reinstall the armrest, and complete the setup.
Kavanjo cautions that strings and bridge pressure add load during setup, and that over-tightening the head can reduce low-end tone. The guide gives no universal head-tension figure, so follow the instrument and pickup manufacturers’ guidance for your banjo.

Fishman Classic Series: positioning on the coordinator rods
Fishman’s Classic Series is built for banjos with dual coordinator rods. Its installation guide is written for an experienced repair technician, and the parts list includes a soldering iron. The placement steps are specific to Fishman’s design:
- Attach the blue shim to the underside of the head. Center it beneath the coordinator rods and perpendicular to them, about 1/2 inch from the edge of the middle bridge foot.
- Set the pickup over the shim. Its magnet locates it on the shim.
- Optionally, move the pickup 1/4 inch toward the neck. Fishman says this produces a brighter response than leaving it directly over the shim. This is Fishman’s own description of its voicing, not an independent measurement.
- Set the pickup about 1/16 inch from the head.
The pickup is a humbucking coil with a neodymium magnet assembly and a preamp, powered by a 9-volt battery. Fishman’s product page states that the Classic Series may be modified to fit single-rod banjos, which means a single-rod instrument is not a plug-and-play match.

- 5/8" maple bridge with pickup Unitary design for maximum sensitivity and signal transfer Custom jack and mounting system Installs in minutes
- LR Bags has molded their same miniature vibration sensor directly into a 5/8" banjo bridge
- As an integral part of the bridge, the pickup captures inherent characteristics of the instrument fluently at the source without altering any acoustic properties
Schatten BJ-02: mounting a sensor under the existing head
The BJ-02 is the least invasive of the three because it leaves the head in place. The sensor goes on the inside surface of the head, directly under the center foot of the bridge, and is fixed with the supplied 3M VHB tape or five-minute epoxy. The jack assembly is where versions differ, and the fit depends on which one you buy:

- FEEDBACK-FREE PERFORMANCE: Eliminate the screech of feedback on loud stages. This humbucking magnetic pickup is designed to capture string vibration directly, allowing you to play at high volumes through any amplifier or PA system without the issues common to microphones or transducers.
- CUSTOMIZABLE SLIDING TONE: Features a unique sliding bracket that lets you move the pickup anywhere between the neck and the bridge. Slide it toward the neck for a warm, "fat" jazz-like tone, or move it toward the bridge for crisp, sharp bluegrass brightness.
- NO-SOLDER EASY INSTALL: Designed for the DIY musician. The SMP+ mounts quickly to your banjo's coordinator rods using only the included hex wrench. No drilling, no soldering, and no permanent modifications to your instrument are required.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY (NO PREAMP NEEDED): Unlike piezo pickups that require an expensive preamp to sound good, the SMP+ humbucker provides a high-output signal. Plug directly into your favorite guitar amp, modeling pedal, or DI box with full, rich bass response.
- COMPLETE MOUNTING KIT: Includes everything you need to get started: the SMP+ magnetic pickup, an external output jack with mounting bracket, three adhesive wire clamps, and the required hex wrench for a clean, professional-looking setup.
Checks before you buy or open the banjo
- Identify the exact pickup model and the kit version, not just the brand.
- Count the strings. Kavanjo’s customized heads are offered for 4-, 5-, and 6-string banjos.
- Determine whether your banjo has dual or single coordinator rods.
- Measure the span across the tensioning hooks.
- Decide whether you are willing to replace the head. If not, the Kavanjo approach is not for you.
- Check the product’s stock status with the seller before planning the job. The Fishman Classic Series product page showed “OUT OF STOCK” when checked on 7 October 2026.
DIY or technician?
The manufacturer materials reviewed do not give a universal difficulty rating, so the decision rests on the specific tasks involved.
- A reasonable DIY job: a Schatten BJ-02 installation where the hook span fits, the head is undisturbed, and you can use the supplied tape or epoxy carefully.
- Consult a technician: any job that requires removing the head, keeping even head tension while reseating it, or soldering. Kavanjo strongly suggests professional head installation, and Fishman recommends an experienced repair technician for its Classic Series.
- Consult a technician after installation: if the banjo will not play in tune, buzzes, or the head sits unevenly after reassembly, have the setup checked before assuming the pickup is at fault.
What the manufacturer material does and does not establish
Most of what is known about these pickups comes from the makers themselves. Kavanjo’s product page includes a statement from its founder, John Kavanaugh, about the product’s origin: “The Banjo has always been considered a loud instrument. But, when I tried to add it to a group with drums, bass and electric guitars it disappeared.” This is a vendor founder’s first-person account, not independent testing or a neutral comparison.

The reviewed material contains no independent, named expert assessment or comparative study of these three systems, so no claim about which one sounds best is supported. The 5,000-plus-hour battery life listed on Fishman’s product page is a manufacturer specification for the Classic Series; the material does not give the test conditions behind it, and it is not a cross-brand measurement.
