Do not assume that brew install wkhtmltopdf works simply because it is a familiar command. Homebrew distinguishes between a deprecated formula, which carries a warning and may still permit action; a disabled formula, which cannot be installed; and a removed formula, which is no longer in the repository. Its formula lifecycle guide explains these states.
Make sure your shell is using the intended Homebrew
Homebrew’s documented default prefix is /opt/homebrew on Apple Silicon and /usr/local on Intel Macs. The installer instructs users to add the matching brew shellenv command to their shell configuration so the shell can find Homebrew and its installed commands. If you have both Apple Silicon and Rosetta/Intel Homebrew installations, check which one your shell is invoking before diagnosing a missing package:

brew --prefixto see that installation’s prefix. -
Compare the result with the prefix for the Homebrew installation you intend to use. A different prefix can mean you are checking the wrong installation’s package state.
Homebrew says developer tools are required when building formulae from source. On Apple Silicon, bottles and casks can be installed without developer tools, so do not install Xcode or the Command Line Tools preemptively just to try a package installation. Intel macOS is a Tier 3 Homebrew configuration; that support tier describes Homebrew’s host environment, not a guarantee that any particular formula works there.

The official wkhtmltopdf downloads page lists version 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, including a 64-bit macOS installer listing for macOS 10.7 or later. That is an upstream listing, not confirmation that the installer works on current macOS releases or is native to Apple Silicon. The project’s GitHub repository is archived and read-only.

If you choose the upstream route, use the project’s official downloads page or official repository to find the release. Treat it as a legacy option, not a current, maintained macOS package. No current compatibility guarantee is established here; do not bypass macOS security protections based on unsupported instructions.
Use wkhtmltopdf safely and assess whether it fits
wkhtmltopdf renders HTML into PDF and image formats using Qt WebKit, and the project says it runs headlessly without a display service. Its latest listed stable release is 0.12.6 from 2020, and the repository is archived, so weigh that maintenance status against the compatibility and update needs of a new system.
The official downloads page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” This matters especially when your application or server converts content supplied by users. Read the warning on the official downloads page and do not treat arbitrary HTML or JavaScript as safe input.

brewis not found or results differ between terminals: checkwhich brewandbrew --prefix. Confirm that the shell startup configuration uses thebrew shellenvline for the intended Homebrew prefix. -
Build or developer-tools error: Homebrew requires Xcode or the Command Line Tools for source builds. First determine whether Homebrew is trying to build from source; Apple Silicon bottles and casks do not require developer tools.
