Prerequisites and what to download
You only need a working Windows 11 PC and an internet connection.
To avoid tampered installers, download VLC from one of these official sources:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Official installer (recommended): VideoLAN website (videolan.org)
- Microsoft Store build (optional): Microsoft Store listing for VLC
Before installing, verify you have enough disk space (the installer is small, but VLC plus metadata and caching typically takes hundreds of MB). Also ensure you can allow the installer to make changes when prompted.
Method 1: Install VLC from the official VideoLAN website
This is the most common route and typically offers the richest feature set.
- Open your browser and go to
https://www.videolan.org/vlc/. - Choose the download for Windows and start the installer (you’ll typically see a button like Download VLC).
- Open the downloaded file (it will usually be named like
vlc-*.exe). - On the installer welcome screen, select Next.
- Accept the license agreement, then click Next.
- On the installation type screen, keep defaults unless you have a reason to change them, then select Next.
- When prompted, choose whether you want VLC to create shortcuts (default is usually fine), then click Install.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then click Finish.
After installation, launch VLC once so Windows can register file associations properly.
Method 2: Install VLC from the Microsoft Store (optional)
If you prefer Store-managed apps (updates through the Store), you can install VLC from Microsoft Store.

- VLC for Kindle plays most local video and audio files, as well as network streams (including adaptive streaming), like the desktop version of VLC.
- VLC for Kindle has a media library for audio and video files, and allows to browse folders directly.
- VLC has support for multi-track audio and subtitles. It supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustments, hardware acceleration and gestures to control volume.
- It also includes a widget for audio control, supports audio headsets control, cover art and a complete audio media library.
- Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Search for VLC.
- Select the official VLC app listing.
- Click Get (or Install).
- Launch VLC after it finishes installing.
Be aware: if you install both the Store version and the website installer, you may end up with two VLC entries. That can complicate default associations.
Make VLC the default player (recommended approach)
The cleanest way in Windows 11 is using the Settings app to set defaults by file type (for example, .mp4, .mkv, .mp3).
Default apps by file type
- Right-click the Start button and open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Default apps.
- Scroll to Choose defaults by file type.
- Find the extension you want (for example, .mp4).
- Select the current app on that row (it opens an app picker).
- Choose VLC media player (or the VLC entry that matches your installation).
- Repeat for common types: .mp4, .mkv, .avi, .mov, .webm, .mp3, .flac, .wav, .m4a.
Windows 11 remembers these associations per extension, so you don’t have to hunt through every file format every time.
Set VLC as default for protocols (HTTP/HTTPS, etc.)
Some streams and links use protocols rather than file extensions. You can set VLC for them too.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- In Settings > Apps > Default apps, find Choose defaults by protocol.
- Pick protocols you use (commonly http, https, and streaming-related handlers if present).
- Select VLC media player if available in the picker.
Depending on your system and installed apps, VLC may or may not show for every protocol. For most users, file-type defaults matter more.
Make VLC default via Control Panel (legacy method)
This approach works when Windows Settings is acting stubborn or you want a classic-style association interface.
- Press Win + R, type
control, and press Enter. - Go to Programs > Default Programs.
- Choose Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
- Scroll to a file extension you care about (for example, .mp4).
- Select the extension, then click Change program….
- Pick VLC media player and confirm.
- Repeat for other extensions.
File association for a specific media file (quick, reliable)
If you only care about one or two formats, this is often the fastest path.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verify VLC is actually default
Verification prevents “it looked selected but didn’t change” situations.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Go to Choose defaults by file type.
- Confirm the extension row shows VLC media player.
- Optionally, double-click a media file of that type and confirm VLC opens.
If VLC doesn’t open, keep reading for troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting: when VLC won’t become default
Default app association issues usually come down to missing registration, conflicting VLC installations, or Windows overriding preferences.
VLC is installed, but file types still open in another app
Try these in order:
- In Settings > Apps > Default apps, re-set the extension for the exact file type you tested (for example, .mp4).
- Launch VLC once, then retry the default setting change. Windows sometimes registers handlers only after the first run.
- Confirm you’re changing the same extension you’re testing (Windows differentiates .mp4 vs .m4v, for example).
The VLC option doesn’t appear
Common causes: VLC isn’t fully installed, you’re selecting the wrong installer flavor (Store vs website), or Windows hasn’t refreshed its app list.
- Re-open the app picker from Settings > Default apps after launching VLC once.
- Make sure you didn’t skip installation steps or deny the installer prompt.
- Restart the PC, then check Default apps again.
Associations revert after reboot
That usually indicates an app management tool or conflicting default behavior.
- In Settings > Apps > Default apps, use Reset for the relevant defaults if you see it (wording can vary by build).
- Re-apply VLC for your key extensions.
- If you recently installed another media app, uninstall it temporarily and test again.
Corrupt or incomplete VLC install
If VLC opens but associations don’t behave, reinstalling can fix broken registration.

- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find VLC media player and choose Uninstall.
- Restart the PC.
- Install VLC again using the official website installer (Method 1).
- Launch VLC, then set defaults again.
Multiple VLC versions (Store vs website installer)
This is a big one. If both builds exist, Windows may associate extensions with one while you’re trying to select the other.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, check whether you have more than one VLC entry.
- If you want one canonical choice, uninstall the other version.
- Set defaults again after uninstalling.
For most users, sticking to the website installer (and removing the Store version) makes default-setting less confusing.
Optional: Adjust VLC settings after install
Setting defaults is about launching the right app. VLC settings help you get consistent playback once it opens.
Preferred audio and subtitle behavior
In VLC, subtitle options can affect what you see by default (especially for MKV files with embedded tracks).
- Open VLC.
- Go to Tools > Preferences.
- In Show settings, switch to All (bottom-left of the Preferences window).
- Look for subtitle options such as encoding and default track selection, then apply changes.
If you’re not sure, don’t change too much at once. Pick one setting, test a file, then decide.
Playback performance and hardware acceleration
If you play high-resolution video, hardware acceleration can help smooth playback.
- Open VLC > Tools > Preferences.
- Set Show settings to All.
- Find the hardware acceleration options (often under Video-related settings).
- Enable GPU decoding if available and your system supports it.
- Restart VLC after applying.
If playback becomes worse after changing acceleration, revert the setting and test again with the same file.

VLC vs Windows Media Player vs Movies & TV / Photos
Windows includes built-in players, but they may be less forgiving with unusual codecs, container formats, or variable bitrate media.
VLC tends to win for “it plays anyway” reliability, especially for MKV files, mixed audio tracks, and streaming links.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make VLC default for both video and audio?
Yes. In Settings > Apps > Default apps > Choose defaults by file type, set both video extensions (like .mp4/.mkv) and audio extensions (like .mp3/.flac) to VLC media player.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if I only want VLC for MKV files?
Right-click a .mkv file > Open with > Choose another app, then check Always use this app to open .mkv files and select VLC. That limits the change to MKV only.
Will VLC open DVD or Blu-ray playback by default?
VLC can play some disc content, but proper playback often depends on your OS features, disc type, and system configuration (and some copy-protection behaviors). Setting defaults won’t change those constraints—only file/open behavior.
How can I confirm VLC is the correct one when multiple VLC entries exist?
In the app picker, Windows usually shows the specific installed app name. Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps to see whether you installed the Store version or the website installer.
Does Windows 11 require restarting after changing defaults?
Usually, no. But if you don’t see changes take effect (or VLC doesn’t show in pickers), restarting is a quick way to refresh app registrations and resolve stale association data.
Bottom Line
Install VLC on Windows 11 using the official VideoLAN installer for the most consistent behavior, then set it as default through Settings > Apps > Default apps and update the file types you use most (like .mp4, .mkv, .mp3, .flac).
If defaults won’t stick, check for multiple VLC installations, launch VLC once, and verify the exact extension. That fixes most real-world cases fast.
