This guide walks through host hardening, the official NanoClaw installation route, post-install checks, and the boundaries of the agent’s container security. The server sizing and hardening sequence below come from a Bluehost guide updated August 19, 2026; NanoClaw’s own project documentation covers the software requirements and security model.
What you need before connecting
This walkthrough assumes an Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 amd64 server and an initial root login. Those are the platform assumptions in the Bluehost guide, not a claim that they are NanoClaw’s only supported options. NanoClaw’s website lists Linux, Docker, Node.js 20 or later, pnpm 10 or later, and a provider credential as requirements. Setup prompts and provider steps may vary as the project changes; follow the instructions shown by the version you install.

These are that hosting guide’s recommendations, not official NanoClaw minimums.
Before choosing a VPS or VDS plan, check that it provides an appropriate Linux image and CPU architecture, enough capacity for your workload, a recovery console, firewall controls, backups or snapshots, and a way to manage inbound network access. These are practical selection criteria, not a provider ranking.

Harden SSH and the server firewall first
Keep your initial root session open until a second terminal can log in successfully as the new deployment user using its SSH key. Disabling root or password login before verifying the key can lock you out. The following order reflects the host-hardening sequence in the Bluehost server guide; check command details against your distribution and provider.

Create an unprivileged deployment user and grant it sudo access. The Bluehost guide uses the username
nanoclaw; you can choose another name and substitute it consistently in commands and paths. -
In a separate terminal, install the deployment user’s public key on the server and test a fresh SSH login as that user. Do not close the root session.

Only after the key login works, edit the SSH daemon configuration to set
PermitRootLogin no,PasswordAuthentication no, andPubkeyAuthentication yes. Restart the SSH service using the service name for your system, then test a new key-based connection before ending the original session.
Allow only the inbound traffic you need
The Bluehost guide’s UFW sequence is to allow SSH first, set the default inbound policy to deny and outbound policy to allow, then enable the firewall. Confirm the SSH rule matches your actual SSH port before enabling UFW, or remote access may be interrupted.

If you configure Slack, assess the particular webhook ingress and TLS termination requirements for your setup; do not assume every channel requires inbound webhooks. If inbound web traffic is needed, plan the required ports and TLS termination, for example through a reverse proxy, rather than broadly opening ports.
Add intrusion monitoring as a separate control
The Bluehost guide also recommends Fail2Ban. Treat it as an additional host control: it does not replace key-based SSH, timely patching, a restrictive firewall, or monitoring access to the server.

Install NanoClaw as the unprivileged user
Switch to the deployment user before cloning and running the project’s documented installer. NanoClaw’s official repository README documents this route:

bash nanoclaw.shThe README says the installer handles missing Node.js, pnpm, and Docker, sets up the credential gateway, builds the agent container, and pairs the first channel. The official NanoClaw website lists the supported software prerequisites and a provider credential. Select a provider and complete the prompts presented by the installer; exact setup details can change between project versions.
If Docker reports a permission problem
The Bluehost guide reports that after its installer adds a user to the Docker group, the current SSH session may not have the updated group membership. It suggests running newgrp docker, checking Docker with docker info, and then restarting the user service. This is a version-dependent troubleshooting suggestion from that guide, not a guaranteed fix for every install. If it does not resolve the issue, verify the current installer’s behavior and the user’s group membership, then reconnect so the session can acquire the updated groups.
Verify the service and CLI
Use the checks described in the Bluehost guide after installation. Run them as the deployment user; exact service names and CLI syntax can vary with the installed project version.

Check the user service with

Confirm that
data/cli.sockexists in the installation directory. -
Send a test message with the CLI chat command documented by the installed version and confirm that a response arrives.
If provider sign-in was skipped, a credentials error during the chat check is expected until sign-in is completed. Use the project’s current setup guidance to finish authentication before treating that result as a service failure.

Understand what NanoClaw’s container security does—and does not—do
NanoClaw’s Security Model documentation describes Docker containers as the primary isolation boundary. It says agents run as non-root, use explicit filesystem mounts, and run in per-session containers. The project root and host .env file are not mounted into the agent; additional mounts use an operator-managed allowlist, with paths checked against blocked patterns and writable access constrained.
The document states: “Real API credentials never enter containers.” This describes NanoClaw’s documented architecture; it is not an independent security audit or a guarantee against every compromise. The repository security file also points to the canonical documentation at docs.nanoclaw.dev and notes that the in-repository copy can drift, so consult the current canonical security guidance when configuring a live deployment.
Egress restrictions and resource caps require configuration
Outbound traffic restrictions are opt-in, not enabled by default. NanoClaw documents NANOCLAW_EGRESS_LOCKDOWN=true as the setting that places agent containers on an internal Docker network so traffic is forced through the configured runtime gateway. With lockdown enabled, direct internet calls that do not use the proxy can fail by design.
CPU and memory limits are also unset unless the operator configures them. Container isolation therefore does not by itself mean outbound traffic is restricted or agent resource consumption is capped.
