You can install Linux on an external hard drive by booting a separate installer USB, selecting the external drive as the installation destination, then starting the computer from that drive. The installer USB and the external drive are two different devices. This walkthrough uses Ubuntu Desktop; screens and boot behavior differ among distributions and computers.
Important: choosing an erase-disk option for the wrong drive can destroy its contents. Back up valuable files and verify the selected disk before confirming any changes.

What you need before installing
- A Linux distribution image: Download it from the distribution’s official source. The steps below use Ubuntu Desktop, so follow the chosen distribution’s own current instructions if you are installing something else.
- A separate installer USB flash drive: Ubuntu recommends a USB stick of 8 GB or larger for its installation media. Creating that media overwrites the USB stick, so copy off any files you want to keep first. The 8 GB recommendation is for the installer USB, not the external drive that will hold Linux. See Ubuntu’s bootable USB instructions.
- An external destination drive: Connect the drive where you want Linux installed. The reviewed Ubuntu instructions do not establish a universal minimum capacity or a tested speed or reliability advantage for external HDDs versus SSDs. Compare capacity, connection compatibility, expected workload, portability, and budget for your own needs.
- Backups: Back up important files on the computer and both drives. Installation changes can erase data, and Ubuntu’s erase-disk setup uses all the space on the selected disk.
How to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive
1. Create the installer USB
Use Ubuntu’s current instructions to write the downloaded Ubuntu image to the separate USB flash drive. This USB is the installer; it is not the external drive where the installed system will live. Writing the image erases the USB stick’s existing contents.
2. Boot the computer from the installer
Leave the installer USB connected, restart the computer, and open its firmware boot menu if the installer does not start automatically. Ubuntu lists F12 as the most common key on PCs, with Escape, F2, and F10 as other common keys. The key and menu depend on the computer; follow the startup prompt or the manufacturer’s instructions. Ubuntu’s Desktop installation guide explains the boot process.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
3. Connect and identify the external destination
Connect the external drive you intend to use. When the Ubuntu installer presents disk setup choices, inspect the displayed drive details and make sure the selected destination is the external drive. If more than one disk is listed and you cannot confidently distinguish them, stop rather than guess.
4. Choose disk setup carefully
For a straightforward setup, select the installer’s erase-disk option only after verifying the selected drive. Ubuntu says this option uses all available space on that disk; choosing the internal drive by mistake can erase it. Plugging in an external drive does not protect the computer’s internal disk from a mistaken selection.

Ubuntu describes manual partitioning as intended for advanced users: “Manual partitioning is designed for advanced users who want to create a specific configuration for their use case.” If you need custom partitions or encryption, use the current instructions for your distribution rather than relying on a universal partition recipe.

Can you run Ubuntu from an external hard drive?
Yes, an external installation can provide a persistent Linux system on a separate drive. It is different from launching a temporary live session from the installer USB: the installer USB starts the setup, while the external destination holds the installed system. Whether that installation boots successfully on a particular computer depends on firmware support, boot mode, and the distribution’s boot setup; it is not guaranteed to work on every computer.
If the external drive does not appear as a boot option
Use the computer’s firmware boot menu and verify that you are selecting the external installation drive rather than the installer USB. If the drive is missing or the system fails to boot, consult current Ubuntu support and the computer manufacturer’s documentation for that device. The boot menu key, available options, and compatible boot setup vary, so there is no single fix established for every machine.

What to know before using another Linux distribution
This workflow is an Ubuntu Desktop example, not a claim that every Linux installer uses identical labels or screens. Disk selection remains the key safety decision: identify the external destination from the details shown in the installer before confirming an erase or partitioning action. For another distribution, use its official, current installation guide for the exact setup choices.
