Before installing: Grok Bot is a desktop app with account requirements
Grok Bot is xAI’s desktop app for working with Bots that can use a persistent cloud computer. It is different from the consumer Grok assistant at grok.com and from Grok inside X. For the Linux desktop app, use xAI’s Grok Bot setup guide and download page.

Choose the correct Ubuntu download
xAI lists a Debian/Ubuntu .deb package and provides Linux builds with each stable Grok Bot release. Choose the package architecture that matches the computer—not the Ubuntu release number.

Open a terminal and run uname -m if you are unsure. Then select the matching Linux architecture on xAI’s download page and download the Debian/Ubuntu .deb file. xAI also lists RPM and AppImage options for other Linux distribution situations; Ubuntu’s documented route is the .deb.
Install Grok Bot on Ubuntu
- Open the official Grok Bot download page and download the Ubuntu/Debian
.debthat matches your architecture. - Open the downloaded package. Ubuntu should offer it to the system’s package installer. Follow the installer prompts to install it.
- When installation completes, open the application menu, search for Grok Bot, and launch it.
- Sign in with the required Cursor account and complete authentication in the browser. If applicable, link the qualifying SuperGrok subscription to Cursor.
xAI’s guide says to install the package with the distribution’s package manager and then open the app from the launcher. It does not provide an Ubuntu-version-specific terminal command, so use Ubuntu’s package installer rather than treating an unverified command as xAI’s official procedure.

Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 compatibility
The official setup material reviewed describes Debian/Ubuntu packages but does not list Ubuntu 24.04 or Ubuntu 26.04 as separately certified releases. The presence of a .deb download is not, by itself, a guarantee for every Ubuntu version. Check the current download page and release notes for any version-specific guidance before installing, particularly on Ubuntu 26.04.
What happens when you close the app?
xAI describes Bot work as running on a persistent cloud computer, so it can continue after you close the laptop or Grok Bot app. That cloud execution model is separate from installing the Linux desktop client, which provides the interface for accessing and managing the work.

Use Grok Bot carefully
X’s general Grok help warns that Grok can produce incorrect answers or omit context, and recommends independently checking its outputs.
